N. Korea: Top official executed, two others to be ‘re-educated’, says S. Korea

THE vice-premier for education in North Korea has been executed, and two other officials have been banished for re-education in the rural areas, said South Korea on Wednesday.

Seoul’s Unification Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon Hee said during a regular press briefing that Education Minister Kim Yong Jin was executed, while Kim Yong Chol, head of the North’s United Front Department, was undergoing “revolutionary methods”. Jeong declined to give any more details on the execution.

According to an AFP report, an anonymous official at the ministry said in July, Kim Yong Jin was killed by a firing squad after being accused of being an “anti-party, anti-revolutionary agitator”.

If confirmed, theirs would be the latest in a series of killings, purges, and dismissals that have been carried out since Kim Jong Un came into power in late 2011.

However, the South Korean government has reported inaccurate developments in the hermit kingdom before – in May, a former North Korean military chief, who Seoul said had been executed, was found to be alive and holding several new senior-level posts.

On Tuesday, South Korea’s mass-read daily JoongAng Ilbo reported that two senior officials were publicly executed by an anti-aircraft gun.
