Video shows sheriff using racial slur during interrogation
Oct. 6, 2015 5:25 PM EDT
DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) A videotape released Tuesday shows a sheriff in a rural Virginia county using a racial slur during the interrogation of a slaying suspect.
The sheriff defended the use of the offensive word as a law enforcement interrogation technique, but a prosecutor condemned the language.
"You don't sell your soul to get on the level of a criminal defendant," Dinwiddie County Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill told The Associated Press. "It is selling your soul. It is unnecessary."
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1MdhVIw ) reported Tuesday that it obtained the video showing Dinwiddie County Sheriff D.T. "Duck" Adams using the slur twice.

The Dinwiddie County sheriff is defending an interrogation technique in which he used the N-word while trying to obtain a confession from a murder suspect.
A video of an interrogation, obtained Tuesday by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, shows Sheriff D.T. "Duck" Adams used the N-word twice when talking to Michael Edward Elmore.
Elmore was accused and later convicted of killing Carter Bascon Northington, 70, better known in the community as the can man" for his long hikes to gather aluminum cans to recycle for money.
Adams said in a phone interview Tuesday that he used the slur just once in an interrogation behind closed doors, while trying to get Elmore to confess.

(16,399 posts)However, if an investigator used the n-word as part of an interrogation get a white supremacist to confess to a hate crime murder, I would have no problem with it. Sorry if anyone thinks that makes me racist.
This is a conversation between law enforcement and a criminal....it ain't pretty.
Detectives frequently say things like "They deserved it....they got what was coming, didn't they?" to murderers and rapists. Is that "selling your soul" too? This prosecutor sounds like an idiot.
Investigators role play to gain the trust and appear to empathize with the accused.

The murderer is white.
The murderer used the n word first, saying 'The n-gers are going to get me."
The sheriff siad he could protect him from the n-gers
It's not really much of a story actually
Except for the part where the guy bludgeoned a 70 year old man to death
