US Says It Considers Violent Acts Against Israel Terrorism
Source: Reuters
The United States considers violence in East Jerusalem to be acts of terrorism against Israel, a U.S. State Department spokesman said on Friday. Spokesman John Kirby told reporters the United States "condemns in the strongest possible terms violence against both Israeli and Palestinian citizens."
"We do consider these particular acts of violence we've seen, the stabbings, and killings there, particularly in East Jerusalem as terrorism, but ... all the violence needs to stop and calm does need to be restored," he told a daily briefing.
Israeli troops fatally shot six Palestinians in protests in Gaza and a knife-wielding Jewish man wounded four Arabs in southern Israel on Friday. The protests were in solidarity with Palestinians in Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where tensions have surged in 10 days of violence in which four Israelis and at least eight Palestinians have been killed.
The violence is not of the intensity of two Palestinian uprisings in the late 1980s and early 2000s but the attacks have prompted talks of a third "intifada."

17 Palestinians killed so far, including three today who allegedly attacked Israelis in East Jerusalem. Six gunned down on the Gaza border yesterday by IDF troops who met rock throwing with gunfire.

Israel, you will never know peace as long as your boot is on the neck of the Palestinians.

(45,850 posts)for doing the same things it guards settlers in the West Bank while they are doing as long as they're doing it to Palestinians
Groups of settlers, at times accompanied by the Israeli army, threw stones at and attacked Palestinian residents, who threw stones back at them. The settlers also set fire to a number of Palestinian-owned agricultural fields.
The soldiers did nothing to stop the settler attacks, instead choosing to shoot tear gas, rubber bullets and reportedly live ammunition against the Palestinians defending their property.

She describes Judaism as a "ruthless and supremacist faith"
She compares Israel to nazi Germany.

(1,214 posts)I had never heard of her, and did a search for where she described Judaism as "ruthless and supremacist faith", and that is not what showed up. She was quoting a book by Jewish authors about certain Israeli fundamentalists, and not speaking of Judaism as a whole.
two partial quotes:
...While the above citations do not in anyway represent the whole of Judaism, the reality is that certain religious texts taught in Israel contain a distressing number of profoundly offensive teachings.
...Most important, while most Israelis also do not hold the beliefs touched upon above, many do and this group holds disproportionate power in the Israeli regime. If Americans are going to continue showering Israel with millions of dollars per day, I think we are obligated to investigate to what degree our money is being used to further the kind of supremacist, racist violence that most of us oppose.

(16,267 posts)In an April 4, 2008, opinion piece she wrote in The Greenwich Citizen entitled, What Our Taxes to Israel are Funding, Weir hand-picked quotations from Jewish religious texts and from a writer who has been debunked widely by scholars. Weir used the quotations erroneously to define and defame Judaism, which she described as such a ruthless and supremacist faith.
The opinion piece, which followed two speaking engagements at the GreenwichPublic Library in Connecticut in February, presented a misleading and false picture of Judaism and the contemporary state of Israel. If Americans are going to continue showering Israel with millions of dollars per day, I think we are obligated to investigate to what degree our money is being used to further the kind of supremacist, racist violence that most of us oppose, Weir wrote.
In an open letter to the ADL published in her blog in February 2009, Alison Weir objected to ADLs description of her opinion piece in The Greenwich Citizen, denying that she hand-picked quotations from Jewish texts and used them erroneously to define and defame Judaism. Weir pointed out that she excerpted the passages from Jewish texts from materials by Israel Shahak, a renowned scholar of Judaism. However, Weir mischaracterizes Shahak as a scholar of Judaism. As far back as 1966, the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits, subjected Shahaks writings on Judaism to a withering critique, and we are not aware of any mainstream Judaic studies scholar who has accepted any of Shahaks conclusions. Shahak was celebrated in his life as a chemist and as an anti-Zionist activist, not as a scholar of Judaism.
In response to a February 2008 New York Times article about her Greenwich appearances, which among other things highlighted a video she showed likening Israel to Nazi Germany, Weir attributed what she viewed as a pro-Israel slant of the articles author, Peter Applebome, to his Jewish upbringing.
