Funding for Perkins Loan ends

Source: WEAU

WASHINGTON (WEAU) -- Time has run out on funding for the Federal Perkins Loan Program. It’s something Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin says shouldn’t have happened.

“There are countless students half a million today, that rely on Federal Perkins loans,” Baldwin said.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, in the 2013-2014 school year institutions like the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University each distributed about 10 million dollars in Perkins Loans. Senator Baldwin fought on the senate floor for schools like these to keep the program. One Senator objected.

"Reauthorizing the Perkins Loan would cost over $5 billion over 10 years. Many witnesses before our committee have said that $5 billion would be better spent paying for more Pell grants,” Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander said.

I had to take out loans when I went to school because they only covered 1/2 of what it cost. There would have been no way I could have went to school without loans.

They have all this money to have political sideshows like Bengazi or to buy stuff from their defense contractor buddies but things that help regular people. Nope, can't be spending money on that now.

The question is will they put that $5 billion into Pell Grants or just cut it. I think anyone who thinks the Republicans will do so might want to have their head examined.

Notice that he didn't say he was going to write a law to actually fund $5 billion in Pell Grants.

Compassionate conservatism: "I'd really like to help you, but I won't."
