Fireworks Erupt Between Clinton ,Republicans At Benghazi Hearing
Source: CNN breaking news
Washington (CNN)The bitter political undercurrents surrounding the Benghazi attacks burst into the open Thursday with Democrats and Republicans feuding over the role of a special investigative panel while Hillary Clinton came under intense fire for her handling of the tragedy.
The Democratic presidential front-runner mounted a passionate defense of her response to the violence, telling the Republicans arrayed against her that she had lost more sleep over the deaths of four Americans in Libya than anyone else on the panel.
"I would imagine I have thought more about what happened than all of you put together," she said. "I have lost more sleep than all of you put together. I have been wracking my brain about what more could have been done or should have been done."
Moments later, her Democratic allies on the panel succeeded in pushing Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy into losing his cool. The hearing quickly degenerated into a fierce encounter over procedure between Gowdy and Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, allowing Clinton to appear above the partisan fray, as she silently watched the exchange while resting her chin on her hand and rubbing her temples.

(3,426 posts)Hillary Clinton is set to testify in front of the House of Representatives Select Committee on Benghazi about the 2012 attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city that killed ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
It is the second time she has been called before Congress to discuss the raid by suspected Islamist militants on the US compound in Benghazi, which took place during her tenure as US secretary of state.
BBC state department correspondent Barbara Plett Usher has been following this complicated story and answered some of our readers' biggest questions about Benghazi on the BBC News Facebook page.
What does this committee do? What are the consequences for Clinton?
The committee is authorised to investigate and issue a final report on the Benghazi attacks: what hampered the government's ability to prepare for them and how it responded.

As such it would be part of Congress' record on the attacks - including seven other congressional committees and a state Department investigation - which are meant to contribute to policy improvements.
But it would not have the power to punish anyone it criticises. However, depending on the conclusions there could be political consequences for Hillary Clinton, which might affect her presidential campaign
Why were we originally told US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died because of a YouTube video that agitated a large crowd of people?

(3,426 posts)There was no lack of drama in the morning session of the House Benghazi committee on Thursday, whose stated purpose is an inquiry into the 2012 attacks that killed four Americans in Libya.
Everyone involved came prepared to play to the TV cameras. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fended off harsh accusations from committee members, including committee chairman Trey Gowdy and Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, saying, I have thought more about what happened than all of you put together; I have lost more sleep than all of you put together.
Clinton was responding to assertions from some members of the committee that her emails regarding the events of Sept. 11, 2012, contradicted each other about initial reports that a video inspired the attacks rather than a premeditated terrorist attack. Jordan tried to personalize the criticism in phrasing his assertion to Clinton: You tell your family its a terrorist attack, but not the American people.
There was also a heated exchange that barely involved Clinton, a rancorous dialogue between committee members Gowdy, a Republican, and Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat. The two argued over Gowdys lengthy condemnation of Clintons friend and former senior advisor Sidney Blumenthal and his influence on Clinton.

A ebullient Hillary Clinton thought so much of her performance during the morning session of a Congressional hearing on the 2012 Benghazi terror attacks that she celebrated with a friendly Democratic congressman before leaving the hearing room for lunch.
A brief Internet video that circulated on Twitter showed Clinton sharing an emphatic 'low five' handshake with Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings, who congratulated her on her testimony.
The two hugged before Clinton made her way past a phalanx of journalists to begin the Benghazi Committee's midday recess.
An editor with Independent Journal, a conservative news website, posted it on Twitter along with a soundtrack from the hip-hop tune 'Trap Queen' by Fetty Wap.
Hastings was an odd choice for Clinton to embrace.
A former federal judge, he was impeached in 1988 by the same House of Representatives in which he now serves then controlled by Democrats and convicted and removed from the bench by the U.S. Senate a year later.
