WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Paul Ryan on Thursday formally declared his candidacy for speaker of the House after getting unified support from across the Republican conference.
"After talking with so many of you, and hearing your words of encouragement, I believe we are ready to move forward as a one, united team," Ryan said in a letter to colleagues. "And I am ready and eager to be our speaker."
The Wisconsin lawmaker and onetime GOP vice presidential nominee will be all but assured of triumphing in elections next week.
Ryan sought unity from divided Republicans as a condition for his candidacy. He succeeded in getting support from three major caucuses within the GOP, including the hardline Freedom Caucus that forced the current speaker, John Boehner, to announce his resignation.

Everyone has seen the news stories about how Representative Paul Ryan, the leading candidate to be the next Speaker of the House, is a budget wonk. That should make everyone feel good, since we would all like to think a person in this position understands the ins and outs of the federal budget. But instead of telling us about how much Ryan knows about the budget (an issue on which reporters actually don't have insight), how about telling us what Ryan says about the budget?
It is possible to say things about Ryan says, since he has said a lot on this topic and some of it is very clear. In addition to wanting to privatize both Social Security and Medicare, Ryan has indicated that he essentially wants to shut down the federal government in the sense of taking all of the money for the non-military portion of the budget.
This fact is one that is easy to find if a reporter is willing to do five minutes of research. Ryan directed the Congressional Budget Office to score his budget plans back in 2012. The score of his plan showed the non-Social Security, non-Medicare portion of the federal budget shrinking to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2050 (page 16).
This number is roughly equal to current spending on the military. Ryan has indicated that he does not want to see the military budget cut to any substantial degree. That leaves no money for the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, The Justice Department, infrastructure spending or anything else. Following Ryan's plan, in 35 years we would have nothing left over after paying for the military.

(1,151 posts)The a hole caucus was given an ultimatum I am sure. Stand down or get left out. These a holes are collecting GOP funds to float their boat while they sabatoge the dam thing. They GOP is infested with these rats and they are eating away at the foundation of the party. The GOP had any balls ,to save their party they will have to separate themselves from the A hole caucus and deny them any benefits and leadership any fund and make them declare their own party. The A hole party. That would make the Dems the majority party in the house and Nancy Pelosi would get her gavel back.
The GOP will have to do this sooner or later. The sooner they do, the better for them and everyone else. And if this latest most desperate gambit does fall apart, they will have no choice.
So if Ryan sticks to his guns he will not run but if he caves ,he will be a laughing stock. He already is that.

(14,543 posts)but, you are conflating some things here.
They are petulant jackasses, more so today and they will be more so tomorrow.
They are wrong, literally on everything and this country progresses only in spite of them.
However, they truly believe their bullshit.
They don't see the need, nor will they every see the need, to "save' their party from their stupid.
Their only, and I mean the ONLY, regret is when they go too far and it hurts them winning elections.
They could give a shit how destructive and vile they are.
And, their childishness does not "eat away at the foundation of the party." It in fact is the very foundation of the party now.
And, sadly, the bullshit wins more elections than it loses. They have a hard time winning POTUS because it is mostly an open vote that they can't gerrymander. But, short of the white house, they have more power today than they have in my 50 years, control of both chambers, the supreme court, most courts, most state governments.
They are not in "danger" as a political party, they are in fact a stronger political party than the democratic party, because they hare more energy, more consistency and more loyalty.

(1,151 posts)I copied and pasted this part of an article that I think explains what I am driving at.
Overlooking the logistical problems inherent in splitting the Republican Party, the practical consideration is that it's unlikely that the presidential candidate of either of the two new parties -- Trump (outsider) or Bush (insider) -- would win the 2016 general election. Moreover, it's unlikely that either of these new parties would win control of either wing of Congress. (The Democrats are likely to win back control of the Senate.) If there were to be three parties, after the 2016 election, the U.S. would be faced with the necessity for a coalition government in the House of Representatives. For example, the new Speaker of the House would have to be elected by a coalition of Democrats and "business-as-usual" insiders, as no party would have a clear majority.
This sounds difficult but it's the situation the House of Representatives is in at the moment. To elect Paul Ryan Speaker of the House, a coalition was formed: "business-as-usual" Republicans plus enough "mavericks" to ensure a majority. Another coalition will be formed to raise the debt ceiling.
Formally splitting the Republican Party into two pieces may not happen soon, but it makes more sense than the current arrangement where the party has two wings with vastly different values and policies.
Happy Halloween! The Republican Party is dead but lives on as a two-headed zombie.
The divide between civilized legislators who genuinely believe in democracy and understand how it works, and the ass holes who have infested the GOP is growing and there will have to come a time when the former must take the high road and leave the assholes to fight between themselves until they destroy one another, which is inevitable. There comes a time when you save yourself at the expense of the greater part. That time may be now, if Ryan is serious, but if he caves then it will be postponed. But the assholes have gains a significant toehold ,they cant be eradicated so they will have to be set free.
You have a nice day .

(14,543 posts)Does not deal in reality.
These assholes dont give the first shit in regard to good government, truth, ethics ... they arent going to spilt for whatever reason people want to think.
And the republicans may be a two headed zombie, but EVERY republican shares one common bond, the belief that the liberal is the most despicable, evil creature, born from the spawn of the devil himself.
Further, the stupid in this country now runs DEEP, and their petulant, angry childlike behavior in fact reflect s where this country is.
We have seen these the republicans are doomed stuff here for over a decade now, and once again, they have more power today than they have had in my 50 years.
Sad reality is despite.their being raging jackasses, as a political party, which has the function of winning elections, the republican party is healthier and more effective than the democratic party.

(9,999 posts)my concern is how much damage he will do before falling on his face. He is hard-liner against the poor/ middle class when it comes to entitlements. I guess I'll just take comfort in knowing that whomever they picked would be bad for the country so let them take out the one they think will be their savior.

(1,015 posts)But it was Mr. Ryan, who said he would not seek the job unless his own conditions were met, who emerged victorious. Most of his demands are now in place, and the Freedom Caucus members, under intense pressure from their colleagues, appear divided and cowed.
The Freedom Caucus is made up of hard-line Republicans who have banded together to try to force changes in how the House Republican leadership functions. The New York Times visited five congressional districts in Virginia, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Maryland represented by members of the Freedom Caucus

The Big Money Behind Paul Ryan's Political Career
Financial, insurance firms and Koch brothers helped Wisconsin Republican build House's largest war chest.
Ryan's wife, Janna Little Ryan, has also entangled Ryan in some potential conflicts of interest. Her family owns stakes in land and energy companies in Texas and Oklahoma, and according to her husband's personal financial forms, the couple has at least $800,000 worth of holdings in those companies. An investigation by the Daily Beast last year found that those companies would receive $45 billion in tax breaks and subsidies under Ryan's proposed budget.
