China wants Britain in a united European Union, Xi Jinping tells David Cameron

Source: South ChinaMorning Post (Hong Kong)

China wants a united European Union in which Britain plays a prominent role in promoting Chinese relations with the bloc, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Britain's prime minister in an indirect plea for the nation to remain part of the EU.

Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU, which it joined in 1973, as the "in" and "out" campaigns prepare for battle in a referendum on membership, to be held before 2017.

In a meeting at Chequers, the prime minister's official country residence, late on Thursday, Xi told Cameron that the EU was a strategic partner of China and also its largest trading partner, China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. "China hopes to see a prosperous Europe and a united EU, and hopes Britain, as an important member of the EU, can play an even more positive and constructive role in promoting the deepening development of China-EU ties," it added, paraphrasing Xi's comments.

China typically does not comment on votes in other countries, viewing it as interference in their internal affairs.

"Xi told Cameron that the EU was a strategic partner of China and also its largest trading partner"

That says tons. Is the American Century over? Is all that's left for us just bloated military bluster and adventurism, like the last days of the fading Ottoman Empire at the turn of the last century?

I hope not. It's time to stop wasteful military spending and to rebuild our economy and manufacturing base at home -- before it really is too late.

UK accused of doing China's bidding after police raid home of Tiananmen Square survivor over peaceful protest

Britain has been accused of doing the bidding of the Chinese regime after UK police raided the family home of a Tiananmen Square survivor – for standing in the road holding up protest banners in Central London.

Chinese democracy activist and Tiananmen Square survivor Shao Jiang, 47, was arrested in the street outside London’s Mansion House where a reception was being held for visiting Chinese Premier Xi Jinping.

Campaigners say Dr Jiang was “brutally manhandled” by police officers after he attempted to block the motorcade by standing in front of it - in a scene reminiscent of a famous image of a lone protestor standing in front of Chinese tanks used to crush peaceful protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

He was holding two banners, which read “End autocracy” and “Democracy now”.

However it's the UK population via referendum, not Dave and his new mates who will decide.

"Campaigners say Dr Jiang was “brutally manhandled” by police officers after he attempted to block the motorcade by standing in front of it"

Is that Ringo Starr in uniform on the left brutally manhandling Dr. Jiang? Ok, sorry for the levity, but can we get some info on what constituted the police "brutally manhandling" Dr. Jiang? I mean, from the OP's picture, the British police look pretty chill. Any hospital reports? Pictures of abuse? Anything?

I respect Dr. Jiang's right to protest and appreciate the symbolism of him standing in front of the motorcade -- I am just not convinced by, what seems to be, the hyperbolic reports of "brutal manhandling" though from his fellow campaigners.

Scene from ferguson Missouri

There we both posted distracting videos/pics of police violence. Was that all an attempt to distract from my disbelief that the British police "brutally manhandled" Dr. Jiang? I hope not.

So, back to the point, is that ANY information that shows how the British police "brutally manhandled, Dr. Jiang? Any? Pics? Vidoes of THAT? None? I thought as much...

hyperbole and over-reach, even by people who's cause we respect, is still disinformation and spin.

The video was *actually* Dr Jiang being manhandled whilst peacefully protesting in front of Xi's motorcade in London

THAT was the brutal manhandling? OK. I thought it was a broken clip because it was so short.

I apologize for thinking it was something else.

Still, it doesn't look like that clip showed "brutal manhandling", it seems to be just one British police officer hustling the guy off the street away with dispatch. Considering they didn't know what he might have been doing, the police response seems, if anything, very understated.
