Walmart has removed the Made in USA labels from its website after being investigated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over deceptive advertising.
Walmart's Made in USA claims were called into question after Truth in Advertising discovered hundreds of products on the website were actually made elsewhere.
The watchdog group filed notice with the FTC after comparing the Made in USA labels against the packaging of the actual products of hundreds of products. Plastic cutlery labelled Made in USA on the website was found to be labelled Made in China on the packaging, while a lotion that the website said was made in the U.S. was found to be made in Mexico.
The FTC closed its probe without laying charges after Walmart agreed to remove all the Made in USA labels from its website.

(5,902 posts)Although my personal favorite has to be the American China Company. They had always been, in fact, made in America (Toronto, OH). And now that they're made in China, they probably have the dubious distinction of being the only U.S. manufacturer that didn't have to do a thing to its logo after the move.

As opposed to being black and murdered by the police, not for a crime, but for the color of your ski,n in a Walmart.
Two standards, as different as black and white.

I don't know about other people, but I deeply resent it when someone introduces themselves with a lie, and despise them even more when that's their continued behavior.

That was the same time that Hilary clinton was on the board of directors for Walmart.

(15,023 posts)Sorry if I was unclear on that: It was always substandard product.
And even the products they were selling that were made in the USA, they struck deals with the US manufacturers to make lower-quality, lower-priced garbage for domestic consumption, so you were buying a name-brand, US product, it just wasn't the same quality as was being sold elsewhere.

(5,902 posts)I was a little kid at the time; but I clearly remember that's when mom began making a point of keeping the receipt no matter how tiny the purchase because the need to return things became so frequent.
Now, of course, it's just something you take for granted. Just another example of "hidden inflation," I suppose.

(23,266 posts)Walmart has a long history of doing this, going back to he '90s when American news media actually covered this stuff. Walmart had a 'Made in USA' campaign going where all clothing display racks featured a 'Made in USA' placard. An undercover reporter went to the Malaysian (I think) factory where the clothes were actually made, posing as a buyer, and filmed the factory manager saying he would put any label in the garments that the buyer wanted. They had children working in the factory that had payment for room and board taken out of their meager salaries to live upstairs.

(10,494 posts)the top 10 richest Americans! We would all feel so bad for them if they had to start paying living wages to their employees instead of us tax payers supplementing their payroll. They might drop out of the top ten! OMG!!!

Those kids got theirs from inheritance, isn't time to say enough is enough and start paying employees a fair wage and making a more pleasant work environment? I've only been in Walmart three times but it was the most depressing experience I ever had. (My sister loves it for the cheap prices but I never found anything cheap enough to go through that atmosphere of misery.)
