Feds probing videotaped arrest of disruptive student

Source: AP

By MEG KINNARD

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Justice Department opened a civil rights probe Tuesday into the arrest of a student who refused to leave her high school math class, after a deputy was recorded flipping the girl backward in her desk and tossing her across the classroom floor.

Federal help was sought by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who placed Senior Deputy Ben Fields on leave after the confrontation at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina.

"It's very disturbing what happened today. It's something I have to deal with and that's what we're going to be doing," Lott said by telephone Monday.

The sheriff's department said no one was hurt during the confrontation, which prompted outrage after several students recorded part of it and shared the video. One student said it all started when the girl pulled out her cellphone and refused her math teacher's request to hand it over during class.

because to them, black children are little, non-sentient animals. Basically, not Human. They have historically depicted us as animals over the centuries, most often as monkeys, but also our children as "coon alligator bait".

Or the NAACP getting involved. So I posted them. IF you bury them in yesterday's post, the new info gets lost unless the title in the OP says updated and includes the new info in the OP. IF the OP gets updated I'll take these down ASAP!

8. Can people chill out until the investigation is done?

Everyone seems to want to have a definite opinion by only seeing a snip-it of a video. Let the investigation be done and then form conclusions with ALL the facts. This Circus and Peanuts thing is ticking me off. We're better than that. People on DU are acting like a F'n Lynch mob and projecting. Maybe they'll throw the book at the cop. Maybe there's something we don't see or understand. If you can't do that -DO NOT ever serve on a jury.

The school board spokesman calls the event "shockingly shameful," and he wasn't speaking of the young lady who had been looking at her phone, and refused to give it up to the teacher.

I believe the school board member and spokesman of a school where violence against the students has already been a problem, including previous violence by "Officer Slam" would be capable of defining what the hell happened.
