Ashton Carter: U.S. to Begin 'Direct Action on the Ground' in Iraq, Syria

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday that the U.S. will begin "direct action on the ground" against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria, aiming to intensify pressure on the militants as progress against them remains elusive.

"We won't hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground," Carter said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee, using an alternative name for the militant group.

Carter and Pentagon officials initially refused to characterize the rescue operation as U.S. boots on the ground. However, Carter said last week that the military expects "more raids of this kind" and that the rescue mission "represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission."

This may mean some American soldiers "will be in harm's way, no question about it," Carter said last week.

No question that this will creep, as well. An almost irresistible temptation to try something else to execute regime change inside Syria.

The problem, at least one of the big problems, is we have built this enormous military. They are well paid, highly trained, and they kill anyone we tell them to kill. They are professional killers, no questions asked. The day of the citizen soldier is long gone. Since we pay so much for these quasi-mercenary forces, it seems a shame to let them sit idle. They're eager to go, because military careers are advanced by wars, not by sitting around watching TV stateside.

Asked for an explanation of why we are getting involved in a civil war in Syria.

Syria will be an even bigger quagmire than Iraq. Why do our troops have to die in Syria?

Shock-n-awe crap in Iraq.... That said, WE cannot fix it militarily! WE will always be the outsider, AND American involvement is the perfect recruiting tool for ISIS.

So very glad my son is out of the military. So very sorry for all the families whose loved ones still serve.

Are we getting a Congressional declaration of war or just continuing to land troops where ever empire desires.

Who are the coalition of the willing? Canada is exiting. And what is Obama's exit strategy?

is an enter and escalate strategy.

edit...i don't think obama would jeopardize his legacy by doing the right thing and getting the declaration. pretty shitty thing to do considering the platform he ran on.

If they are actually there are welcomed by the Syrian govt and the vast majority of the people, American soldiers? not so much. People should be able to understand when they are not needed and move the hell on.

I used to read posts saying the US should just leave the Syrian "mess" to the Russians if they want it. But the administration can't even do that. They will continue to meddle as more Syrians die from their intervention.

So, we still get to not only bomb Syria but also to invade with ground troops?

Have we even tried requesting international legal backing for this at the UN?
