Evidently IRS Commissioner John Koskinen is to be the sacrificial lamb Republicans take hostage to atone for the sin of being completely wrong about the so-called "targeting scandal."
Jason Chaffetz just announced -- to great sound and fury -- that his committee filed four articles of impeachment against an IRS commissioner who was not commissioner at the time the so-called "scandal" occurred.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, announced at a Monday press conference that his committee has asked the President to remove Koskinen from office. He accused the IRS commissioner of misleading Congress and failing to cooperate with the congressional investigation into the IRS's alleged targeting of conservative groups under the tenure of Koskinen's predecessor, Steven Miller.
"Mr. Koskinen failed to testify truthfully. The statements that he made to Congress were false," Chaffetz said Monday. "It is imperative that this committee pursue all constitutional remedies. That may include contempt and it even may include impeachment of Mr. Koskinen." ...........more......

And now we find:
-- Another "special committee" to "investigate" Planned Parenthood
-- And another committee to investigate NOAA over the agency's climate change conclusions

(2,574 posts)Does anybody in the world think that any of these tax & donor disclosure exempt political groups are non political? Rove's Crossroads, Koch's nefarious nest of dark money, some Democratic leaning too. When ordinary citizens contribute to specific candidates, it's not tax free plus it becomes public knowledge. Why should these organizations & their wealthy donors not play by the same rules and contribute taxes and sunlight to our democracy?
In the Eisenhower Admin the IRS, on their own authority, changed the definition of this tax exemption from "entirely" social welfare to "primarily" social welfare. It now costs the IRS dearly in determining & defending who qualifies for what was once a uniform, strict and unambiguous tax exemption. And because of the Lerner fautrage, now the IRS is weaker enforcing even the post Eisenhower standards for tax exemption. Both the Kochs and Rove were finally under challenge for their social welfare exemptions, rightful challenges to their political 'charities" that conveniently went scot free because of the Lerner chaos.
Lawrence O'Donnell complains about this a lot. It would benefit the IRS and American taxpayers hundreds of millions of collected taxes. Plus take the IRS support for secrecy & untraceable dark money out of political campaigns.
It's clear to me that part of the rush the Koch's & Rove et alios get from saturating political campaigns is that their hundreds of millions-billions are taxfree, leaving the American taxpayer to subsidize the tax "free speech" of the oligarchy.
Hopefully the IRS will respond to this rightwing witch hunt by just lowering the long overdue book on their compromised definition of charity. If charity is defined as entirely social welfare, then nobody, Dem or Repub, has a case to challenge, out lawyer and sue the IRS.

(21,719 posts)before granting tax exempt status to these PACs?
These patriotic Political Action Committees with anonymous donors were actually asked to CLARIFY THEIR PURPOSE before the IRS granted them millions in tax breaks!
I don't exactly know, but I will say anyway, This Is What Hitler Did before he took power!!!
Disclaimer: No actual PACs were harmed or injured in any way. No conservative PACs were actually denied tax exempt status, even though according to the actual law, 501-C tax exempt organizations are prohibited from ANY political activity. But we should all still be pissed off at the IRS, because they are Obama's Brownshirts who are destroying our freedoms.

(22,000 posts)If she is impeached, does this then go over to the Senate? I'm curious about the process.

(5,455 posts)In the House a simple majority is needed to impeach him, which I expect they will get. It then goes to the Senate where it essentially becomes a trial and both sides present their case. The IRS Commissioner is allowed his own lawyer if he so desires. It requires a 2/3rds vote to "convict" at which point he would be removed from office. In theory criminal charges could also be placed against him, but since that would require the DOJ to prosecute, that is not likely to happen.
Note, the President can NOT pardon him for the impeachment.
The Republicans seem fairly confident that they have something that will hold up to public scrutiny for them to consider impeaching the IRS Commissioner.

(22,000 posts)It sounds like the Republicans would have to get at least a dozen Democrats to vote for impeachment if that happened. I think it's not likely, but with the way some of them are voting lately you never know.

(5,455 posts)It's the trial and conviction in the Senate that becomes problematical.
Putting aside what I believe and feel and viewing this dispassionately, the Republicans seem feel their case is strong enough to convince the AVERAGE voter that the IRS Commissioner deserves to be impeached. If they can convince the AVERAGE voter, that will have a negative impact on whoever the Democratic nominee for President is and as well as some Senate races.

(12,655 posts)anytime government tries to do anything good they yammer on about how much money is "wasted" on programs like food stamps, Social Security and unemployment benefits. And they have no problem funding shit like this? These people all need to be primaried and or voted out ASAP. I will be very curious to see if all of the nonestablishment trump fans are willing to dump these people from Congress if they really true to their word about government wasting money.
