Seattle Explosion Levels 2 Buildings and Injures 9 Firefighters
Source: New York Times
An explosion in Seattle on Wednesday flattened two buildings and shook a neighborhood, prompting a large response by emergency officials. At least nine firefighters were reported injured.
The explosion, reported around 1:45 a.m. Pacific time, was so loud that it could be heard as far away as Shoreline, a community about 10 miles north of downtown Seattle.
The police and firefighters descended on the scene, near the intersection of Greenwood Avenue North and 85th Avenue North, in Greenwood, a neighborhood in the north-central part of the city.
The blast shook the neighborhood, which is known for its concentration of restaurants, bars and coffee shops and has of late been home to middle-class families and upscale professionals.

(357 posts)SEATTLE (KOMO) - Nine Seattle firefighters were injured in an apparent natural gas explosion that leveled at least three businesses in the Greenwood neighborhood early Wednesday morning.
The explosion happened in the area of the Greenwood Quick Stop Market at N. 85th Street and Greenwood Avenue N. just before 1:45 a.m.
Firefighters were sent to the building about 40 minutes earlier for a report of a natural gas leak. While they were investigating the source of the leak, the building exploded, according to Seattle Fire officials.

(5,477 posts)I was working at the computer, and at about 1:45 there was a huge explosion - shook the house pretty good. A few things fell off shelves. That whole building (3 businesses) is gone, several others damaged, windows broken out for about a block around. Most of the firefighters that were injured have been released from the hospital.
I turned on the scanner when I heard the explosion. I have NEVER heard a fire dispatcher sounding so shaken up.
The area for several blocks around is closed off to traffic now, and may be closed for several days. Buses are rerouted, but running close to schedule.

Mr. Gyros, Neptune Coffee, and Greenwood Quik-Stop do not exist anymore - the building is gone. Several other businesses adjacent are damaged, including a relatively new bicycle shop and a new restaurant that was still under construction. The brothers that own Mr. Gyros are amazingly great people - been in the neighborhood for many years.

(4,138 posts)I used to be friends with the owners, though we've drifted out of touch over the last few years.
I heard the explosion too, and I'm almost in Shoreline.
