Labour urged to expel Trotskyist Gerry Downing over 9/11 views

Source: BBC News

Jeremy Corbyn is facing calls from David Cameron and a Labour MP to expel a far left activist over his views on 9/11 and so-called Islamic State. The prime minister quoted a blog by Gerry Downing, which said the 9/11 suicide bombers "must never be condemned".

Mr Downing said he had been quoted out of context by the prime minister. He said he had been explaining the motivation of the 9/11 bombers, "not agreeing with what they were doing".

He added: "I don't support the politics of Isis, they are vile barbarians. But I don't support American imperialist bombing either."

Mr Downing, a former bus driver and member of the tiny Socialist Fight group, says on Twitter his ambition is "to end capitalism on the planet by socialist revolution".

He was expelled by the Labour Party last August over views expressed on his Twitter feed and blog but was re-instated in November after an appeal.

He in no way represents the views of the vast majority of Labour Party members. I'm sure there's plenty of idiots in the Democrat party too.

Don't try to blow this out of all proportion.

But everyone else on this thread seems to have. He is one solitary member, he has no official position and he was kicked out. He's been let in on appeal but we don't know anything about the appeal. We don't know what was said, if his views have changed, we don't know anything. This is the Tories making mischief by seeking out the blog of one solitary nutter. That's all it is.

Would you like the Democrat party to be judged by the blog of its weirdest member?

Labour expels Trotskyist activist Gerry Downing

Labour has expelled a far left activist whose views on 9/11 and so-called Islamic State have been criticised.

The party's ruling NEC said it had excluded Gerry Downing after "further evidence" had come to light about him.

Jeremy Corbyn had come under pressure to act after David Cameron raised the issue at Prime Minister's Questions.

The PM quoted a blog by Mr Downing, which said the 9/11 hijackers "must never be condemned". Mr Downing said he had been quoted out of context.

Thanks for posting that. I hope people can see that this is a non story, that someone whose views do not represent those of the Labour Party has been kicked out pretty quickly. This is just Tory mischief making.

i think Labour does have a much wider problem with the return of a great many cranks, oddballs, wierdos, CT's and downright unpleasant people that the party had previously managed to get rid of.

it is connected to the Corbyn thing - its not Corbynites are all nutters and loons, but in practice it is very clear that the rules, procedures and attitudes that the Corbyn lead and favouring internal party structures have encouraged and allowed - along with large numbers of very normal, very decent people into the Labour party - a cohort of people we'd previously got rid of, or who had been refused membership, into the party.

my branch chair, and all of the other CLP officials i've spoken to, have said that the Party structures no longer allow the CLP's to warn off the central party about 'undesirable elements' because the central structures don't want what they see as non-Corbynite individials (whether they are or not..) acting as a bar to Corbyn supporting members. those central structures are simply not interested, and infact they see any attempt to warn the central structures about particular individuals as an attempt to subvert the leadership.

it is that paranoid, and that poisonous.

its up to you as to whether you think the party machinery is cynical enough to think that it doesn't matter how obnoxious an individual is as long as they vote Corbyn in the next leadership vote, or whether you think that the party leadership is happy to flood the CLP's with loons and wierdos if that provokes a proportion of the CLP officials who keep non-Corbynite MP's in their seats to leave in disgust and frustration.

you're right, it is the Tories making mischief - but who gave them so much ammunition?

I'm not overjoyed with his performance so far. However, I think these individuals are only a tiny proportion of the new influx. Most were decent people turned off by Blair's love affair with Bush.

Despite not voting for Corbyn, (I voted for Burnham,) I do think he's a decent enough bloke, and smart enough to realise that what may be good for him is not necessarily good for the party.

In the end it boils down to results. Each election is a test and if any of them aren't positive he'll be on notice. I understand that if May's council elections don't go well there'll be a rebellion, although they might wait until after the referendum to get the knives out.

Gerry Downing is quoted for, that the 9/11 suicide bombers "must never be condemned". This is where it was taken from:

... It is the justified outrage of the oppressed as opposed to the outrage of the oppressor, one violence is that of the slave and the other is that of the slave-owner. One is progressive, no matter how distorted its actions are, and must never be ‘condemned’, imperialism is the violence that holds the whole planet, or almost the whole planet, in thrall, and that violence can never be supported by serious Marxists in any circumstances. That is the dilemma the conspiracy theorists seek to avoid. That is the entirely understandable motivation for 9/11 and suicide bombers. You may object that it is entirely counter-productive for their case and has so much the opposite effect ...
