Airliner crashes in Russia; 55 aboard reported dead

A Boeing 738 passenger jet crashed as it was landing at the Rostov-on-Don airport in southern Russia, the country's Southern Regional Emergency Center said Saturday.
All people on board have died, Russian state news agency Tass reported, citing an official at the emergency center.
Flydubai Flight 981 had traveled from Dubai to Rostov-on-Don with 55 people aboard, the emergency center said.

Weather at time of crash 46 F Dewpoint 39 F. Winds from WSW @26 gusts to 43. Four mile visibility scattered clouds at 1800 and ceiling at 3600 above ground level.

(36,818 posts)According to the last METAR, the wind was almost aligned with the runway and they would have been in visual conditions for pretty much the entire approach. It's possible the conditions may have deteriorated at the time of the approach, but there isn't much to indicate that was the case.

(36,818 posts)It's curious as to why he decided to go around the 2nd time. The weather reports were favorable for a normal approach. Go arounds are serious business and are where lots of flight crews lose it, even though they should be routine. It's notable that the crew was discussing go around procedures with the tower, so they seemed to be prepared for that possibility.
