The first family is headed to Cuba for a historic trip the White House says will 'deepen' America's relationship with the communist government.
President Obama arrived at Andrews Air Fore base with wife Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia and the First Lady's mother, Marian Robinson, to board Air Force One and officially begin their trip.
As they left protesters marching against Cuba's human rights record were arrested in Havana.
Obama will become the first sitting U.S. president to visit the communist country in nearly 90 years when they touch down in Havana on Sunday afternoon for a three-day visit that precedes two days of travel in Argentina.

President Obama welcomed in Cuba on historic visit
President Obama arrived in Cuba early Sunday evening, signaling a historic shift in U.S.-Cuba relations as the first sitting U.S. president to visit the island nation in nearly nine decades.
After touching down in Havana, the president's two-day trip to Cuba will include a packed schedule, with plans to have official meetings with President Raul Castro and to appear at a White House summit with business entrepreneurs.
But Mr. Obama will also have time to celebrate the diversity of culture on the island just 90 miles off American shores. His more leisurely planned activities include a tour of Old Havana and the Havana Cathedral and an appearance at a baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Cuba's national team.
The president departed from the Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by his wife and two daughters. In a bipartisan show of support, a bevy of about 40 U.S. House and Senate members also joined him. Several business leaders are also expected to make the trip to Havana in the coming days to take part in the White House's entrepreneurship conference.

(58,785 posts)being made thousands of miles away, Obamas in the air as Cuban dissidents are moved away from the airport. It's nice that Michelle's mother wanted to see it in person. The benefits to their children in being part of history may live longer, but I'd think her mothers' impressions might be far more profound. Lucky her!
NY Times:
Obama intends to make sure this rapprochement is irreversible, by partisan groups in the U.S. anyway, meeting with the communist government, dissident leaders, and leaders of the Roman Catholic Church. In his entourage are both American political and business leaders...

(128,547 posts)Michelle's mother was grinning up a storm! But then she remembers the "before" as a young adult, where the Obama's (my generation) were not yet born when the overthrow and break in relations occurred, and were mere infants during the Bay of Pigs crises and its aftermath.

(58,785 posts)but apparently out of the question. I haven't read anything about her, so found a nice The Telegraph article from last June that includes this.
Before her son-in-law entered the White House, Mrs Robinson had never been abroad. Now, accompanying her granddaughters, she has visited Senegal, Tanzania, China and Italy, where she met the Pope.
That is some journey, considering that she was born, one of seven children, in 1937 in segregated Chicago. She did not go to college and married Fraser C Robinson III, a former boxer and soldier, who spent his working life tending boilers at the citys water plant. They brought up their children, Michelle and Craig, in a modest home in the working-class, south side area of the city. Until the children left the nest, she was a stay-at-home mother, obsessed with them getting in to the best colleges. Both went to Princeton.

(128,547 posts)and I am so happy that she got the opportunity so unique that only tiny fraction of citizens have experienced it - notably living in the White House (and in her case, not being part of "the help". )
Any kind of travel outside of one's backyard is eye-opening and the more people travel, the more culturally mature they become. And back in the day for her and many of us boomers, we may have had "pen pals" to interact with and learn about others in different countries. Now people can communicate real-time with people from all around the world thanks to the internet!

(58,785 posts)I took a sustainable development MOOC a couple years ago now that was filled with people literally from around the planet. I didn't do a lot of chatting myself, but reading intelligent and frequently very knowledgeable viewpoints and descriptions of happenings from so many places on one subject after another was really special.
A little different from my little Czechoslovakian pen pal who stopped writing after only a few months when the Russians invaded to crack down on liberalization. Hope she's fine.

(128,547 posts)my class was in the World Affairs Council so we had all sorts of pen pals and gave performances and presentations at other schools and at the end of the school year, got a trip to the U.N. I still crack up remembering the ditty that we had memorized -
A small world, a small world
People of the world
People of the world
Peace, love, harmony in living
And regarding that little duck gif - I had been looking through some of the wild things on gif sites and spotted that. It just seemed so poignant and reflective of so much in life - you're walking along with your little ducks all in a row and then something comes along and disrupts the heck out of you. And you just have to gather everyone/everything back together and try to move on.

Obamas whirlwind trip is a crowning moment in his and Cuban President Raul Castros ambitious effort to restore normal relations between their countries.
While deep differences persist, the economic and political relationship has changed rapidly in the 15 months since the leaders vowed a new beginning.

President Barack Obama has arrived in Cuba for the start of an historic three-day visit and talks with President Raul Castro. He became the first US president to visit the Caribbean island since 1928, when President Calvin Coolidge arrived in a battleship.
There was heavy rain falling as the presidential party descended from Air Force One at Havana's airport.
Obama went directly to greet staff at the new US Embassy building and then join his family for a tour of Old Havana. On Monday, Obama was due to hold talks with Cuban President Raul Castro and also hold an event with US and Cuban business people.
The diplomatic opening is a centerpiece of Obama's foreign policy legacy and the fulfillment of his pledge to engage directly with longtime American enemies. First Lady Michelle and their two daughters left Andrews Air Force Base on Sunday afternoon for the short flight to Havana, where they were spending three days.

It's no Panama City, but it'll do.
While Barack Obama makes history with the first presidential visit to Cuba in nearly 80 years, his teen daughters will be along for the ride.
Sasha, 14, and Malia, 17, just happened to be on spring break and free to make the unprecedented trip, which began Sunday.
When President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters left Washington, DC on Sunday afternoon, they kicked off what the White House hopes will be a wound-healing visit to the communist Caribbean island.
While not usually a part of state trips, this time the first daughters get to watch as their father holds a meeting with President Raùl Castro that's been decades in the making and delivers a speech to be televised around the world.

March 18, 2016
by Marjorie Cohn
In advance of President Barack Obamas historic visit to Cuba on March 20, there is speculation about whether he can pressure Cuba to improve its human rights. But a comparison of Cubas human rights record with that of the United States shows that the US should be taking lessons from Cuba.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights contains two different categories of human rights civil and political rights on the one hand; and economic, social and cultural rights on the other.
Civil and political rights include the rights to life, free expression, freedom of religion, fair trial, self-determination; and to be free from torture, cruel treatment, and arbitrary detention.
Economic, social and cultural rights comprise the rights to education, healthcare, social security, unemployment insurance, paid maternity leave, equal pay for equal work, reduction of infant mortality; prevention, treatment and control of diseases; and to form and join unions and strike.
