What do Argentina, Costa Rica and Brazil have in common?
They all outranked the United States in a comparison of election standards and procedures conducted by the Electoral Integrity Project. The United States ranked 47th worldwide, out of 139 countries.
The survey is a measure of dozens of factors, including voter registration, campaign financing rules, election laws, the voting process and vote count.
Overall, one in six elections around the world were considered electoral failures. But in general, countries in the Americas and central and eastern Europe, as well as in Asia, were considered to be on the winning side in terms of electoral integrity, with Scandinavian and Western European nations topping the lists.

(250 posts)GO BERNIE!!! We need to stop rewarding the establishment with our votes just because they have a D behind their name. Start voting for the candidates that truly represent a majority of Americans. As long as people follow these corporate Muppets because they believe that is the only way, we will continue to work against our own self interest. I'm not rewarding these goons anymore with my vote. For now on, they should learn what the American people want. Their thieving, lying asses out of office.

(1,192 posts)Ya think?
Let's see. Repugs won't let minorities, youth, poor people vote in the south. A vast number of prison population and ex-convicts don't get to vote. Vote counts and caucus process fucked-up. Former president brazenly breaking electoral laws. Both parties in bed with deep-pocket donors. Democratic front-runner is awash in "campaign contribution" money. SuperPAC out of control. FEC under-staffed, under-funded, and undermined by SCOTUS decision. Wall-to-wall coverage on a twitter troll/presidential candidate. Media blackout on a candidate who has raised from more individual contributors, and brought out more crowds than any presidential candidate in history.
Well. No shit it's the worst election.

(2,983 posts)A despicable truth... but a truth, nonetheless. Freedom is a popular word here - it is also a word used to describe any number of terrible acts - up to and including war -.
At the same time... 47th worldwide - not shocking to me, not at all. It seems that the more our politicians, conservative radio hosts and others scream about their notion of "freedom", the less of it we actually have.

(22,651 posts)especially mail-in votes/early mail-ins, IMO its to easy for a large block of mail-ins to be frauds. some of the local and state elections are 50-100 votes apart.

(29,122 posts)to the I.G. Unless someone has a better idea!
Disenfranchisement issues shouldn't have to be litigated as their first recourse.
A highly qualified team should ensure security of the voting equipment and procedures.
A robust enforcement team should be on call as well.
And prosecution should be de riguer.
