Ford was a buffoon, and an abusive ass. His death at an early age doesn't change that. I think we're in agreement.

I'll never understand that tendency. If you don't want people to speak badly of you when you're dead, don't be a complete POS when you're alive. Pretty simple really.

Kind words won't help him now; unkind ones won't hurt him; and he's safe from the truth.

I do have sympathy for his family. Navigating the storm of emotions that comes from losing a difficult family member is not easy.

He had a wife and 2 kids who, although he abused them all, deserve kindness. I'm sure they will all be conflicted for some time to come.

A good chunk is self-inflicted. He looks too old to just be in his mid-40's. If the cancer didn't get him, something else would surely have.

As someone who has both had to confront susbstance issues (though I don't think as bad as his) AND as someone with late stage cancer that I've dealt with for 8 years, I can tell you all his abuse issues over the last few years have created their own problems irrespective of the cancer.

And I'm very sorry for all you've dealt with - that's terrible and I sincerely hope things go well for you. But he really was trying to turn things around. I had no love for him, but feel very sad that a relatively young man didn't get to make his life better - for himself, his family and those who knew him. Every death affects me this way ... that's just me.

Oncologists have no clue, and its one of the rare diseases wher they don't blame lifestyle choices, so what do you know that they don't?

from people in Toronto.

I think my favourite was from Scaachi Kou'sl (from Buzzfeed) Twitter feed this morning:

@Scaachi
You don't have to be that sad about a man who was a racist and a bigot and a sexist and an abuser and who tried to burn our city down.

@Scaachi
Not everyone gets redemption in death. Save that for your "complicated" uncle when he dies.

Just remember we're allowed to have complicated feelings about people and their deaths. We can feel sad for Rob Ford's passing as a person and have unambiguous dislike for his policies and legacy within the city of Toronto.
