Trump fined $10,000 for bench, kiosks in Trump Tower lobby

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) - Donald Trump's business has been fined $10,000 for installing two kiosks in, and removing a bench from, the lobby of Trump Tower.

The city Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings released Hearing Officer Clive Morrick's Aug. 12 decision Wednesday.

For months, city buildings inspectors have sought to enforce a unique permit governing Trump's Manhattan skyscraper.

Trump was given special permission to build his Fifth Avenue building bigger in exchange for making the atrium open to the public daily.

....But buildings officials found the Republican presidential nominee violated those rules by removing the 22-foot marble bench and installing kiosks selling Trump merchandise.

The kiosks have since been removed, and city officials confirmed the bench was reinstalled Aug. 3.

4. Ok, what does a bench have to do with public access?

I mean, trump is a dipshit, but the article really doesnt spell out WHY the law was being broken by moving a BENCH. You have to have a bench in the lobby to be considered publicly accessible? Why? Is this just some large city BS?
Just sounds a bit silly to me

until 10pm each night. It has an atrium and the bench allows for public seating to rest, talk, or just for your day-to-day people watching. In other words people can hang out.

7. In our medium-small city, a great big hotel got a really nice front lawn with ocean view....

They got it by agreeing that this swath of land would be landscaped and maintained by the hotel and that it would be public property, available for picnickers and frisbee players and whatnot.

Trouble is, the public doesn't know that. It looks like the front lawn of this fancy hotel, and it has an implied Keep Off the Grass sign. There is not a single bench, not a single table, not a single meandering stone path. Not a single person aside from the occasional gardener trimming the bushes that edge it.

See what I'm saying?

10. It's about the square footage

In NYC if you want to build higher or wider than the space is zoned for, an arrangement is often negotiated that lays out terms for public access. It's a binding contract. Allocate a specific amount of square footage of your building's footprint as public access and you can build 5 stories higher. Or something like that.

He got the variance he wanted. When he puts up the kiosk he's taking away from the square footage of public space he was contractually obligated to maintain.

Can't pull down those extra 5 stories now right? It's a big F U to the city.

12. I can see it now....a Trump kiosk at the entrance to the White House

Selling Trump teddy bears and Trump Kids tee shirts. Why stop there....just add kiosks at all the monuments. I'm sure we can move the statue of Lincoln to the side a little bit to make room for Donald's books and key chains.

This man/child knows no boundaries. And as someone else suggested...good luck with collecting that fine.
