No-name storm dumped three times as much rain in Louisiana as Hurricane Katrina
Source: Washington Post
The Louisiana flood has taken at least 13 lives and damaged 40,000 homes. This multibillion-dollar disaster is a devastating example of the damage water can do and proves that a hurricane is not required to leave behind a flooding catastrophe.
This unnamed storm produced three times as much rain in Louisiana as Hurricane Katrina.

Ryan Maue, a meteorologist for WeatherBell Analytics, computed that the no-name storm deposited the equivalent of 7.1 trillion gallons of water on Louisiana. Enough water fell that it could fill Lake Pontchartrain about four times, he said.
Hurricane Katrina, by comparison, only left behind about 2.3 trillion gallons of rainwater in the state. (It produced a lot more rain in Mississippi, about 4.26 trillion gallons). The flooding in Louisiana from Katrina was mostly caused by storm surge, the tsunami-like swell from the Gulf of Mexico, which caused levees and flood walls to fail, not freshwater rain.

Fox News has been pushing the talking point that the media is biased because they are not treating President Obama's handling of the flooding in Louisiana with the same criticism given to Bush's handling of Katrina. Indeed, a favorite right wing talking point is to praise Trump's photo op passing around a few boxes of materials in the midst of a disaster zone.
Of course, no one is mentioning that around 1,800 died during Hurricane Katrina compared to 13 deaths due to the recent storm, which dumped three times as much rain on Louisiana. Put another way, the property damage and flooding is a lot worse than Katrina, but loss of life has been mercifully kept down low.
Nonetheless, the right wing press is pushing a false equivalency suggesting that Bush was unjustly criticized because he did not cut his vacation short. No, Bush was criticized because nearly 2,000 people died due to his administrations mishandling of the disaster. No gives a rat's ass about whether Bush was on vacation.

President George W. Bush was torn to shreds in 2005 by mainstream media commentators for his initial response to Hurricane Katrina yet President Obamas detached response to the recent Louisiana floods has been met with resounding silence from those same outlets.
George Bush doesnt care about black people was the shocking charge by singer Kanye West about President Bushs response to Katrina. Wests was a particularly blunt assessment, but echoed a growing narrative pushed by mainstream media outlets that Bushs response was out of touch, inept and most of all, he didnt care about people on the ground.

So far, there have been no mainstream media outlets criticizing Obamas apparent lack of response, nor have there been any celebrities claiming Obama doesnt care about the people on the ground.

I am so glad that it is Obama in charge. The death toll is at 13. The damage huge, yet FEMA's response awesome.
Louisiana drown under another President. This one? He is holding them up.
Good luck!

(3,212 posts)and no one has been saved by FEMA. The so-called Cajun Navy were the folks out rescuing people.
FEMA will prove itself in how it helps feed, clothe, clean-up, and restore normalcy to these folks' lives. Most of that will be done through volunteers, but FEMA plays a critical role in coordination and funding.
And I still don't understand why President Obama couldn't make a 5 minute statement days ago. He doesn't have to go to Louisiana and get in the way. Believe me, this has been noticed and plenty of folks feel like they're being ignored by our president, our government, and, frankly, the media. The response compared to Katrina and, in particular, Sandy has been horrible.

(17,380 posts)Not sure how you can make the argument that the handling of this storm is worse than Katrina because Obama is not doing photo ops, but there are folks who are making this argument on FoxNews.

(3,212 posts)if you're in contact with people on the ground. And I did say "in particular, Sandy" for a reason since this event would more correctly be compared to Sandy.

(4,225 posts)The federal agencies in charge of disaster relief have responded, but the governor has pointed out that the security protocols necessary for a presidential visit would impede first responders and delivery of aid (shutting down interstates for the presidential motorcade and the like).
Compare to FEMA's complete mishandling of Katrina and W coming down for the photo op to "fix" the agency's mismanagement.
Complete false equivalency from fux noise.

(18,864 posts)Not really but so much of Louisiana is prone to flooding and hurricanes.
I think they should all just relocate to Southern Utah. No water on the ground there. Just wonderful desert. (I love the desert). of course, they would have to share it with the Fundamentalist Mormons. And regular Mormons. I think Southern Utah is something like 95% Mormon. Or it was when I lived in SLC.

And the Southwest US is largely fucked because climate change is destroying their water resources and torching their forests.
The upper Midwest is probably the best bet right now for a livable ecosystem 50 years from now.

Louisiana was a swamp to begin with and it looks like it may be going back to being a swamp. I would really worry about all the diseases that can come with that kind of water. Would never consider living there for that reason alone. And I don't like water.
