Republicans prep ‘break glass’ emergency plan as Trump tumbles

Source: Politico

Republicans, worried about preserving their House and Senate majorities in the face of fierce headwinds, are accelerating their plans to distance themselves from Donald Trump – and may soon concede, if only implicitly, his defeat.

Party strategists are mapping out blueprints for down-ballot candidates, in TV ads and on the campaign trail, to present themselves as checks on a Hillary Clinton presidency. It’s an approach that would essentially admit a Trump loss. In interviews, nearly one dozen Republican operatives said they had begun poll-testing the idea – which one labeled a “break glass in case of emergency” strategy - to gauge how the public would react to it.

It would represent a remarkable step – one not seen since 1996, when down-ballot Republicans, resigned to Bob Dole’s loss, campaigned as backstops to Bill Clinton’s second term. It comes at a time of mounting unease among Republicans about Trump’s prospects and how it will impact the fortunes of others. In recent days, a debate has begun to simmer among the party’s operatives about whether it will soon be time for the Republican National Committee to cut Trump off and redirect resources to congressional lawmakers.

“It would be political malpractice if you weren’t exploring the effectiveness of that messaging strategy,” said Rob Autry, a Republican pollster who’s looking into the idea. “If the current polling trends hold true, then down-ballot Republicans will need to start thinking outside the box.”

Why don't you try to take away my health insurance another 50 times!

I mean I love the idea of losing everything I worked for my whole life if I get sick.

There's some glass to break.

I just hope someday you assholes get what you deserve.

If they write off Trump, Rs will just stay home. They won't be voting for Trump or the down-ticket candidates. Even with low voter turnout, the heavily gerrymandered districts aren't going to flip.

Ergo, the concern is that competitive districts would flip. Would that be enough for the Ds to retake the House? Good question.

GOPers live in a un-reality world. Have they forgotten all the past and current bullshit they have done to minorities and women? Yep they have because they think they are of GAWD.

She's got ads that practically scream "I don't want anything to do with that orange asshole, I'm NORMAL!!!!!" She rehearsed them so many times the waggle in her voice which is characteristic when she speaks publicly is almost gone.

She's combining the "I'm not a batshit crazy loon" approach with some nasty attack ads by third party players against her opponent.

then, no, it isn't convincing.

I'd think Republicans in states where Trump wasn't that popular should be distancing themselves from him already. It's easy to do - he wasn't a Republican until he ran, so it's simple to say "he doesn't represent the Republican party, I do". Just paint him as someone other states foisted on the Republicans.

"Trump's Overhaul Won't Succeed." http://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/donald-trump-reset-insiders-caucus-227177 and found this gem...

A Virginia Republican made a similar analogy: “You can keep moving people in and out of the car, but so long as the drunk guy is driving it while blindfolded, the ride probably isn't going to get any smoother.”

I don't think I've ever seen a more perfect description.

I don't see how this would hurt tge orange Pumpkin's feelings. He'll feel betrayed by the RNC and go completely rogue. It wouldn't surprise me if he then started comparing GOP politicians to "crooked Hillary".

The GOP pumped completely disproportionate amounts of national party funding into what appeared to be purely local races - those for state legislature seats. But they were very carefully chosen ones & their Dem opponents didn't stand a chance. 500:1 spending ratios, that sort of thing. Once completed & the national GOP won those state legislatures, they began rewriting the district lines. By the next election, they owned the House of Representatives in Washington D.C..

This is when the Democratic Party should be focused on undoing that damage. Hillary will be fine - focus on carefully choosing seats at local levels, rewrite those gerrymandered lines and fix Congress, DNC!

I fear however that instead they are just going to sit on their laurels and celebrate Clinton's historic margin of victory. Meanwhile, in four years Washington will still be in a deadlock, we'll still have blocked SCOTUS and Federal Judge seats, and the GOP will block everything she tries to get done.
