ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) A New Mexico affiliate of United Way is resuming raffles of firearms to raise money.
The Alamogordo Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/2b4gKmI) that the United Way of Otero County confirmed last week that it received permission from United Way Worldwide to continue raffle sales.
The organization had been selling 2017 calendars with a raffle entry ticket attached for $50.
. . .
The firearms being raffled include shotguns, handguns and an AR-15 rifle.

(15,220 posts)Horribly corrupt organization, or at least our local chapter is. Big scandals over the use of funds, etc.
But if I did support it, I'd stop. The auctioning of guns is beyond the scope of what any charity should be involved in doing.

(4,112 posts)I 100% totally get it that folks will want to quit donating, but I have worked at the Boys & Girls Club who relied on the UW's help for their summer program. I'm a member of the Otero County Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (a restorative justice program) and the UW's around the state help these programs exist.
Sad Sad Sad
I'm not suggesting folks quit donating; they did when the UW quit helping our closest Planned Parenthood back in the 90's-or that they keep donating....it's just a sad no win-no win for our community. Makes me sick & cry .

I am quite sure a federal background check must be passed to receive the firearm.
