Mexican president Pena Nieto plagiarized law thesis, report says
Mon Aug 22, 2016 5:02am BST
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto plagiarized nearly a third of his 1991 undergraduate law thesis, according to a report published on Sunday by one of Mexico's leading investigative journalists.
Of the 682 paragraphs that made up the 200-page thesis, titled 'Mexican Presidentialism and Alvaro Obregon,' 197, or 28.9 percent, were found to be plagiarized, the report said.
The article and accompanying video were published on the website of journalist Carmen Aristegui, whose investigative team revealed in 2014 that Pena Nieto's wife was in the process of acquiring a luxury home from a government contractor.
The Casa Blanca scandal, as it came to be known, dealt a major blow to the reputation of Pena Nieto, whose poll numbers have recently hit all-time lows over perceptions he and his Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) have failed to stamp out rampant crime and corruption.

(You may recall every time you saw an article on this Presidential Candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto, our corporate media babbled wildly about how "handsome" he is, his "movie star good looks," "matinee star," "most handsome politician," "boyish good looks," "Mexican Ken doll," "glamorous," "attractive," etc., etc., etc..doll," "glamorous," "attractive," etc., etc., etc.. They really pushed him hard.)

Of course, the deputy ambassador would have to do all the real work--Melania can't be trusted with things like visa requirements, even!

(2,931 posts)And have found the definition of plagiarism to vary somewhat. Any thesis is going to have background information that should just be standard knowledge to anyone in the specific field. A scientist shouldn't have to cite Pythagoras for figuring out how triangles work - its just common knowledge. Possibly people outside of the field may not be aware of what is common knowledge and assume plagiarism.
A second point, according to my university english professor you can plagiarize yourself. In which case my entire PhD thesis is plagiarized since it is all work that I had previously published in journals. I wish I had thought to ask him about that scenario back when I was an undergrad.

At least those in favor of Nieto would say that. Bias can be nefarious.
Strictly speaking, isn't 28.9% rather closer to 1/4 than 1/3? 3.9 over 25.0, but 4.4 under 33.3?
