Hampton Creek Under SEC Inquiry for Product Buybacks
Source: Organic Authority
Vegan foods startup Hampton Creek Inc. is currently undergoing an informal inquiry by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission after purchasing its own vegan mayonnaise, Just Mayo, from stores without proper disclosure.
The inquiry will determine whether Hampton Creek Inc. improperly recognized revenue from purchases made with company money and may lead to enforcement action.
Were aware of the informal inquiry and well be sharing the facts, as opposed to the inaccuracies reported by Bloomberg, Hampton Creek Inc. founder and CEO Josh Tetrick told Bloomberg.
According to earlier reports from Bloomberg, this buyback may have begun as early as 2014. Hampton Creek claimed at the time that these purchases were made as part of a quality assurance program, but according to data supplied to Bloomberg by Tetrick, not all of the purchases were accounted for by this program.

(23,527 posts)egg alternative. They have been promising it for the past few years.
I guess they are greedy and slimy like the other companies. They got billionaires investing in their products and it looks like they used the money to purchase their own products instead of research.
It's disappointing.

(42,862 posts)I remember reading (ages and ages ago) how the Scientologists would buy "Dianetics" in bulk from wholesalers (which reported sales figures to NYT for their bestsellers list) and then they'd RETURN the copies to the wholesaler (which was NOT reported to the NYT for bestseller calculation).
There may be more to the story, but I guess the "restocking fees" and penalties were worth the effort of being able to game the system.

(7,981 posts)Our beloved Just Mayo is under fire. (Not again!) According to Bloomberg, Hampton Creek organized an undercover campaign to buy back its own products, and thus fabricate a higher demand.
Eight months prior to the investment funds closing, Tetricks team of executives planned to purchase the companys products in mass quantities. The publication itself reviewed over 250 receipts, expense reports, cash advances and e-mails. Five former employees also confirmed this information. Thats why Just Mayo might not be as popular or successful as we thought.
