Costco's credit card nightmare just got even worse
Source: Business Insider (Yahoo)
Costco's marriage to Visa has been rocky pretty much from the start and this weekend shoppers faced a new problem, despite assurances that issues in the relationship were being ironed out.
On Friday evening, a number of Costco members received emails from Citi, the issuer of the new Visa-Costco credit card, alerting them that their credit card accounts had been closed.
In at least some cases, members reported that they received emails addressed to other people that contained the last four digits of other users' account numbers, raising concerns that their accounts had been hacked.

Citi told Business Insider that Friday's emails were intended to be sent to Costco shoppers whose memberships had lapsed to alert them they could no longer use their Costco Anywhere Visa cards. But because of a systematic error, some active Costco members received emails intended for other cardholders.
Citi said that the users' accounts were not compromised and that the mistake affected only a small percentage of Costco members.

(26,727 posts)You don't have to use the Costco Visa at checkout. You can pay with a different one if you prefer their benefits.

(42,862 posts)... because it's Visa, we don't accumulate the Hilton points at the same rate per dollar spent as before.
I was also disappointed that they couldn't come to an agreement... at least we have this stop-gap solution, but we ONLY use that card at Costco.

(15,220 posts)I get points from my Am Ex that I regularly use to donate toward a nonprofit organization. I've also never had any issues with my American Express account either.
I had an issue with Citicorp long ago and simply will NOT have one of their cards in my household.

Not temps exactly, but both Citi and Premier Bankcard are revolving door call centers.

(12,693 posts)I tried to pay off my Amex card ahead of the change-over, but there were a few pending transactions. When my very first Citibank Costco Visa statement arrived, the very first thing I saw was big red letters telling me I was 30 days past due and owed, in addition to the usurious interest charges, a $35 late fee.
I called Citi, and asked how i could already be 30 days behind when I had just recited the statement on a card I had not used yet. Well, it had to do with the different billing cycles of Amex, and Citi...blah, blah. They took $27 off the late fee but they wouldn't back down on the interest.
Then I wrote to Costco to tell them that I didn't like being forced to do business with a big bank, that this was a perfect example of how they operate--high interest & incessant fees--and that I would use that card solely as my Costco ID, and that Citi bank will not see another dime of my money. All my future Costco purchases will be cash or debit.
No answer so far.

(5,790 posts)Being totally honest - I'm much more ticked off that they switched the soda fountains from Coke to Pepsi.
In general, AMEX Cards are a pain inasmuch as they aren't accepted in so many places.

(6,252 posts)I would like to shop at Costco but I don't want to use their credit card. I don't see why they can't take debit and credit cards or cash.
There isn't one close enough to shop frequently enough to get their preferred card.
I think they make their own problems with restricting the credit card they push.

(12,693 posts)Costco accepts cash, debit cards and any Visa card...like the one from my credit union. The only place they don't take cash is the gas station, but they still take any visa or debit card.
