Philippines' war on drugs leaves 1,900 dead in less than two months
Source: Baltimore Sun
Newly elected Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte launched a war on drugs about seven weeks ago. The grim result? More than 1,900 dead and counting.
Ronald dela Rosa, chief of the country's national police force, said at a Senate hearing in Manila this week that only around 750 of those people have been killed by police and that the rest of the deaths are now under investigation. Whether it's 750 or 1,900, the Philippine government has made no effort to mask the intentional targeting of anyone believed to be dealing drugs.
But according to dela Rosa, police were never given "shoot-to-kill" orders for those suspected to be drug dealers.
Funny he should claim that, because Duterte himself told a group of reporters the exact opposite earlier this month.

(11,787 posts)How is an American ally pulling this shit?
I don't get it man. I don't.. I mean. What the fuck? I ain't blaming anyone, I'm not making any kind of political statement. This is just fucked up. And I'll go ahead and indulge my lizard brain and ask, "Goddamnit if we're THE superpower with the most badass military in history, why is this shit going on? " And I know why. But sometimes man, sometimes...with all this endless killing. You know?
It hurts my heart.

(975 posts)especially as an American living here. Now with Dirty Duterte as President things are getting worse. If you don't like your neighbor or if you are having a land dispute or are just drunk and POed, just kill them. Kill 'em and plant some illegal drugs, you will be hailed as a hero and may even get a medal from Dirty Duterte. I have taken the unusual step of carrying a pistol when I walk to our fishpond. We have been in the process of evicting some squatters from our land that surrounds it. They have put us on notice that they will do anything they can to stop us. Like I said these are some shaky times in the southern Philppines and throughout the rest of the islands too from what I am hearing... Do not let Trump become President America I implore you... If you want to see what he would do look no further than the PI's. Duterte wants to make friends with Al Qaeda, Abu Sayyaf, MNLF, ISIS and NPA terrorists and shoot some kid smoking a joint.... Donald Drumpf would, in my opinion, like to kill journalists, Blacks, Mexicans, Muslims, and anyone that doesn't look like him. Yet wants to be best friends with North Korea and Russia.. There is something wrong of that there is not a doubt...

(101 posts)About half of my facebook friends are Filipino due to the fact I have spent a lot of time in the Philippines and my wife is from there too. I am astonished at the percent of my Filipino contacts who voted for this guy knowing he was behind death squads when he was the mayor of Davao. Whenever I criticize Duterte, I get lambasted by most of my Filipino friends. I've been told told on several occasions that my opinion means nothing because I don't live there and don't understand the situation. I even heard it said that the president has suggested it's ok to murder a neighbor if they are a drug addict. This is a very sad situation for me.

So, specifically, specifically. How do you do it? How do you do it? OReilly asked.
I know police in Chicago, Trump replied. If they were given the authority to do it, they would get it done.
How? How? OReilly pressed.
You have unbelievablehow? By being very much tougher than they are right now, Trump said. They are right now not tough. I mean, I could tell you this very long and quite boring story but when I was in Chicago, I got to meet a couple of very top police. I said, How do you stop this? How do you stop this? If you were put in charge, to a specific person, Do you think you could stop it? He said, Mr. Trump, I would be able to stop it in one week. And I believed him 100 percent.

(18,477 posts)The US is a world leader and has been for a long time. Most of the world followed the example of the Founders in establishing a Constitution. Maybe the next president from our party can do something the others haven't, END THE WAR ON DRUGS.
Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote often about government and Democracy. Henry David Thoreau, in his pamphlet Civil Disobedience summed up parts of a variety of Jefferson's writings with the line, "That government is best which governs least."
There is no doubt that drugs, intoxication, dependency and addiction are monumental afflictions crippling individuals and their families. It's time, actually it's long past time, to look at the casualties and collateral damage from the war and the laws behind it to determine if the cure is worse than the disease.
The war on drugs, like so many other wars, is a mistake. The first step is admitting we have a problem...
