Ryan Lochte: Speedo and Ralph Lauren among four to end sponsorship

23 August 2016

Four sponsors have dropped disgraced US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, including swimwear manufacturer Speedo and fashion label Ralph Lauren.

They were followed by announcements from skin care firm Syneron-Candela and Japanese mattress maker Airweave.

It comes after Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint by a policeman after a night out during the Rio Olympics.

Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medalist, has earned millions of dollars through endorsements.

Speedo, the biggest sponsor of the four, said: "We cannot condone behaviour that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for."

I wasn't much to write home about. If I ran into Ryan Lochte at an airport, for example, I wouldn't berate him. He's hardly much worse than I was.

Matthew 7:3-5 King James Version (KJV)

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

5. Funny, from my perspective it reeks of white privilege.

If not for that, they would have dropped him immediately and the other two sponsors would not still be pondering the decision.

7. They literally took half of a week to drop him.

That's pretty immediate. You're stretching there with the white privilege angle.

Merely losing a commercial endorsement for lying to and about law enforcement does seem to stand in rather stark contrast to a ten year old black child being chased by cops with guns drawn for playing basketball in the street...

14. The comparison being used as an example of white privilege

was the Twitter troll outrage over Gabby Douglas and the initial reaction to the Lochte incident in the United States, with the author suggesting that white privilege, and not a sign of national solidarity in absence of a full understanding of the facts of the situation, is why Lochte didn't suffer condemnation.

Jokes about white privilege in this context intend to mock this initial bogus comparison, as Gabby Douglas continues to enjoy near-universal support and admiration of Americans, while Lochte is seen as a national disgrace, not to suggest a problem with how black Americans are treated in their communities doesn't exist.

6. personally I think he's been shamed enough. He was a drunk ass but probably assumed robbery

when his group handed over cash to two gas station 'police' at 3am. Next time he travels in SA ask for the restroom key, all gas station restrooms are locked, all of them have 'security guards'.

Be polite & hand over a small tip$ when you ask for the key to avoid extra attention.

There was a person present translating into English for them that the security guards wanted them to pay for damages or they would call the police. There is no way they assumed it was a robbery.

Hope all the endorsements end for him. He should no longer be able to profit from swimming, imo.
