Trump Floats Obama-Like Deportation Plan, and Fans Don’t Mind
Source: Bloomberg
Donald Trump is backing away from his call for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, and even some of his rally-going supporters say theyre fine with it.
If he wins the November election, the Republican presidential nominee said Monday, he would do the same thing as President Barack Obama in prioritizing the removal of criminals residing in the U.S. illegally, but perhaps with a lot more energy.
Trump appears to be heeding allies longstanding advice to soften his stance on deportations, which they worry is toxic to Hispanic voters, now that he faces Democrat Hillary Clintonand troubling poll numbersin a general election fewer than 80 days away.

Trumps alignment with Obama about deportation priorities is a departure from the Republicans statement a year ago that all the estimated 11 million undocumented people in the U.S. have to go and that a deportation force could handle the job in as little as two years.

So, Trump is abandoning his signature issue of deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants where he heralds himself as the agent of change and is now embracing the status quo under President Obama? So much for being the agent of change.

(128,847 posts)President O was oft-dubbed "Deporter-in-Chief" given he purportedly "deported" more illegal immigrants than any previous President, although WaPo sought to dispel some of the myths behind that.
In any case, the default position of the GOP has, for the past 8 years, been to say "No" to almost every single action that Obama proposed, including much of their own standard policy positions that he offered to adopt. I.e., they demanded that they would only accept the opposite of whatever he requested, like a simpleton version of "Simon Says", where the participant attempts to anticipate the command too far in advance and gets caught doing the wrong thing.
This is why the GOP has collapsed - they in essence rejected most of their own party's traditional positions, outside of the cultural wedge issues and rampant bigotry against every group other than straight Christian white males, which resulted in a hollowed out version of their former selves, now filled with KKK followers and radical RW lunatics.
