Colombia government and FARC rebels reach final peace deal: Govt sources

written by Adriaan Alsema August 24, 2016

Colombia’s government and far-left FARC rebels will announce on Wednesday that they have reached a final peace agreement, government officials told several media.

According to British press agency Reuters, three officials close to the negotiations confirmed the deal. Bogota newspaper El Tiempo also cited a government source claiming the negotiations had ended.

“We are facing an imminent deal to close the negotiations,” one of Reuters’ sources said, adding that it was unclear what time the announcement would come. “It will probably be in the evening.”

The formal signing of the long-negotiated peace treaty is likely to take place in the second half of September, according to newspaper El Espectador.

Colombia’s government has secured a groundbreaking peace deal with leftist Farc rebels – promising to end a war that wracked the country for more than half a century, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions.

The Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, announced on Wednesday that a national plebiscite would take place on 2 October for voters to either accept or reject the accord.

“The war is over,” declared Humberto de la Calle, chief government negotiator, after signing the deal in Havana, where talks have been held since November 2012. “It is the time to give peace a chance.

Iván Márquez, the Farc’s top negotiator, said: “We have won the most beautiful of all battles: [the battle] of peace for Colombia. The battle with weapons ends and the battle of ideas begins.”
