Assange says WikiLeaks to release 'significant' Clinton campaign data
Source: MSN/Reuters
WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange said on Wednesday his organization planned to release "significant" information linked to the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton before the Nov. 8 election.
Asked if the data could be a game-changer in the election, the Australian told Fox News in an interview conducted by satellite: "I think it's significant. You know, it depends on how it catches fire in the public and in the media."
Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for five years to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces sexual assault accusations. He denies the allegations.
WikiLeaks released files in July of what it said were audio recordings pulled from the emails of the Democratic National Committee that were obtained by hacking its servers.

I have to say that I have never seen a U.S. election so overtly manipulated by foreign countries and individuals as the current election. Talk about the weaponization of Wikileaks with the cooperation of Russian hackers and lobbyists.

He deserves every bit of scorn
He was was part of a hacking group in Australia when he was younger, and arrested for that, so he also has a record of being a thief, and I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of that weasels mouth
He is a bum
two different things:
1. releasing information provided to him is not theft
2. to which extent do you have to 'curate' the information provided to you
The answer to the second question (by Wikileaks/Assange) has differed from case to case. They have spent extraordinary efforts - in cooperation with major media outlets - to look through the files from Afghanistan and the Embassy Cables in order to remove anything that might endanger any individual mentioned.
Still, the false allegation was immediately launched, by Pentagon spokespersons and others, that 'people have to die because of those leaks!!!' and so forth.
In part as a result of media organisations betraying Wikileaks and developing an agenda of their own (Guardian, Spiegel), in part due to the lack of resources, but mostly because their efforts were never acknowledged, they only remove personal information if they can easily detect it and consider it actually, not just in theory, dangerous.

Most of these home addresses and phone numbers should be in publically available phone books. I don't know how many spammers have my email address, but I can tell you a lot of them do.
My question to you was: what is the actual damage to the donors whose data were published? How are they being hurt? What is the danger? Another poster tried to convince me that their 'identity' could be stolen, but I remain unconvinced. I don't think this it is enough to even get access to somebody's email account.
still_one
(92,060 posts)damage.
It isn't you that determines whether their was damage or not. People have a right to privacy
Interesting this supposed progressive outlet, WikiLeaks, is effectively making the decision that those individuals don't deserve a right to their privacy, so lets publically display their names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, etc.
Releasing those emails, phone numbers, and addresses, exposes those individuals to stalking, and other unsavory characters.
I doubt you would be very happy if your name, address, phone number, and email(s) addresses were posted here. In fact there have been DUers who have been stalked by and harassed because someone obtained their address and other personal information.
reorg
(3,317 posts)expose the people concerned more to 'stalking' than, say, a phone book?
Do you really think that 'unsavory characters' would make the effort to search for personal information in these Wikileaks databases, of all places?
No, these accusations were made from the beginning, and they were always meant to distract from what the leaks actually do: make information available that is of public interest but would not otherwise see the light of day.

(3,317 posts)to make such information available without asking. But it doesn't make Assange a 'criminal'. And at least we got your false claims in post #8 out of the way (credit card information: nope; social security numbers: I don't think so - perhaps there is one deep down in the huge haystack, but we don't know where). Some progress can always be made, even in such a discussion.

What is missing from the story is whether or not the leaker was trying to expose the hack. Everyone assumes the leak comes from the hacker. I think the hacker never intended to get caught and fully intended to continue spying on the Dems right up to the election. Now, those pushing the blame on the Russians are suspects in the cover up.
