Citigroup: A Trump Victory in November Could Cause a Global Recession

Source: Bloomberg

The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States could lead to chaos in markets and increased policy uncertainty that tip the world into recession, according to Citigroup Inc.

"A Trump victory in particular could prolong and perhaps exacerbate policy uncertainty and deliver a shock (though perhaps short-lived) to financial markets," writes a team led by Chief Economist Willem Buiter. "Tightening financial conditions and further rises in uncertainty could trigger a significant slowdown in U.S., but also global growth."

Buiter, for his part, has been warning of a global recession for nearly a year, though he previously saw a deceleration in Chinese growth as the proximate cause.

In what they deem to be a "conservative" estimate, Citi's team suggests that a Trump victory would cause a one-standard deviation tightening in U.S. financial conditions and pick-up in global policy uncertainty, which would adversely affect consumption and investment in both the U.S. and the rest of the world:

not like riots, but protests, uncertainty, market crashes

People would stop buying anything, hoard what they have, there
would be jumpers from tall buildings, mass alcoholism and worse

I'm uneasy that he's trying to sound reasonable at times. It will be
just like GWB, by election day he will sound like Hillary

We cannot allow this to happen to our country

About people would stop buying things. My wife and I own a family business and we are scared what might happen if that "pond scum" planted his sorry ass in the Oval Office.

Consider federal government employees and the military. How do State Dept. diplomats represent the US with a Trump in the WH? Yes, while enlisted troops support Trump over Hillary, consider the leadership. They have already said they are prepared to disobey illegal orders. Just imagine the potential for disarray.

Imagine federal law enforcement officials directed to start the immigrant roundup. Regardless of what Trump blithers on about, he wants them out and he wants that wall.

Consider the impact of Trump overturning all of Obama's executive orders. That would be an interesting NYT article. What would be the impact of this move?

Then there's the Supreme Court.

And his cabinet appointments. Fracking on federal lands. Selling federal lands. Disabling the National Park Service and thus hobbling the interior department.

Slate calls it the Trumpocalypse.

when the existing order was suddenly disobeyed

The French Revolution is a case in study, as is November 1917

The Federal Government could break into little fiefdoms, much like
Hitler's henchmen ran their command for themselves. They plundered
art, gold, materiel .. you know the story. Historians are still sorting it out.

Martin Luther's 95 Theses

The slaughter of the Cathars

This is scary stuff, and it's all about ownership, resources, political power

Someone wants those federal lands for their own profit

The model to look for with Trump - is Oliver Cromwell

I'd be more worried about the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse would descend up the globe thanks to idiots giving Trump access to the Nuclear Codes.

Trump as president would not be a good thing, but these scare stories are BS.
