Patrick Murphy beats Alan Grayson to face Marco Rubio for Senate
Source: AP
U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy has won the Democratic nomination to face Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.
Murphy defeated fiery liberal Rep. Alan Grayson on Tuesday, aided by the backing of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
Murphy appeared confident in the final weeks of the election, virtually ignoring Grayson and focusing instead on Rubio.
Murphy was first elected to the House in 2012, defeating incumbent tea party conservative Allen West.
While Grayson has more consistently voted for Democratic priorities and Obama's agenda, many party leaders thought he was unelectable because of his brash demeanor.
Murphy has criticized Rubio as caring more about his political ambitions then his constituents, while Republicans have criticized Murphy for embellishing his resume and lack of experience.

be light years better than Rubio.

(48,957 posts)"crappy" is an adjective. Since "pays" is a verb it needs an adverb.

He is a wealthy man with some good convictions, I wish he was also a wise man.

(50,254 posts)We all know Murphy is too bland and passionless to win or to do anything worthwhile if he does win.
Nothing positive ever comes of Dems nominating former Republicans. If you start on the right, it's impossible to turn progressibve or even moderate.
We're doomed to lose to Rubio by twenty points now.

Even if he wins, Murphy would just spend his term voting against HRC oon everything that matters.

He started off like a upcoming star and faded away when his personal life became public. A shame.

(50,254 posts)It's impossible for Murphy to inspire enough enthusiasm to beat Rubio. And it's all going to be the fault of the "we HAVE to nominate centrists" crowd.

(11,949 posts)When the candidate you support gets 17% of the Democratic vote and you think he was the best candidate to take on Rubio.
Grayson is an ass. I would love to see him go Green! Would fit right in with their type.

(50,254 posts)(Grayson brought his defeat on himself through horrible behavior...the positions he held had nothing to do with it)but of all the people they could choose instead, there was no good reason to nominate a conservative who had LOST his House seat.
Murphy can't beat Rubio. We doomed ourselves to six more years of Rubio by nominating him. No one who wants a progressive Senate is celebrating this result. It means Florida will never have a decent senator again.

The only thing sweeter than this asshole losing is that his hotty-of-the-month also lost. Resoundingly.
Hilllary is brash. Proposing a health care plan way more progressive that ACA in 1993 that was killed by fellow Democrats. Kaine is brash. Taking on the NRA in Virginia and winning. That is the kind of Brash I can get behind.

(42,585 posts)If he's as conservative as you claim, you would expect him to be among the small number of Democrats voting for recent legislation such as the "Conscience Protection Act" -- the anti-choice crowd's most recent wet dream legislation. But he wasn't. And he wasn't among the handful of Democrats that joined with repubs in supporting a number of other conservative house bills.
But those are just facts, I guess.

(42,585 posts)Florida 2012: Republican Senate Primary: 1.127 million votes cast
Democratic Senate Primary: 876,000 votes cast
Florida 2012: Senate General election:
Democratic candidate: 4.5 million votes
Republican candidate: 3.4 million votes.
So the 251,000 vote "deficit" in the primary election turned into a 1 million vote win in the General.
Over 8.5 million voters went to the polls in Florida in 2012 -- the far far lower turnout for the primary is not a predictor of the result in the General.

(4,490 posts)Sure, it's gotten him in trouble a couple times, but I'm more apt to think it was his mounting personal problems and perceived hypocricy when it comes to his finances and professional background that did him in. Voting record isn't going to matter in a Democratic primary when people see him as an abusive unhinged millionaire.
