Despite misgivings, judge allows Oregon standoff defendants Ryan Bundy, Ken Medenbach to represent
Source: Oregon Live
Despite Ryan Bundy's repeated "contempt for the court process'' and failure to grant a blanket assurance that he'll follow the court's orders during trial, U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown said she'd give him "the benefit of the doubt'' and allow him to continue to represent himself.
The judge also said co-defendant Kenneth Medenbach could continue to act as his own lawyer, but Medenbach promised to adhere to the judge's rulings.
Though the judge said it sounded as if Bundy was "reserving'' his right to follow court rulings based on his own interpretation of the law, she said she'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
She cautioned him one more time: He'd be subject to immediate revocation of his right to represent himself if he raises any issue before the jury that the court has ruled was inadmissible.

Just because they ignore her rulings or disrupt the court, a person should not be denied the right to represent themselves, even if it's to their detriment.
Fine them, contempt, whatever you want, but I don't care about disrespecting the court or ineffective counsel if it's pro se.

(50,557 posts)When he was seven, someone ran over his head with a car. Several years later, they found a bone fragment in his brain and did surgery to remove it. He's never been really right since.
If there was a person who really needs to have his right to represent himself taken away, Ryan Bundy is that person. Most sovereign citizens belong in jail, but Bundy seems WAY too malleable to be held responsible for his actions.

My post was directed at how many courts perceive themselves as holier than thou and it really should be a place where the common man can argue his case.
I pro se myself in civil cases and it's a lot of knowledge needed.

(50,557 posts)I remember Ricky Ray Rector, at least well enough to retain some of the specifics of his execution. This guy was the modern Robespierre - a man executed after shooting himself in the head. He blew some random guy in a nightclub away, then killed a cop who came to negotiate with him, then tried to commit suicide. For his last meal he ordered a pecan pie, but set it aside to eat after he got back from his execution.
Given what we know about his requests and behavior, I am not sure Ryan Bundy realizes the gravity of his situation.

This, however, is an idiot...
This fucking guy tried to buy a $2 million house by writing the words "Accepted for Value" on a piece of paper. They threw the SOB in prison for two years for doing it. When he finally got out, he started making videos claiming the people who bought the house after Christopher was removed from it (and the $500,000 worth of damage Christopher inflicted on it was repaired) are actually renting it from him.
