McCain survives primary challenge
Source: The Hill
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is projected to win his Senate primary as he seeks to win a sixth term.
McCain fended off a primary challenge by state Sen. Kelli Ward, who lobbed controversial attacks at the longtime senator and closely hitched her campaign to GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. With just two precincts reporting results, the Associated Press called the race.
Ward said last week that McCain, 80, is too old to stay in the Senate, implying that he might die in office.

I have mixed feelings about the guy but he's a real hero. Still, enough is enough.

(27,995 posts)His opponent, Kelly Ward, is a tea partier and conspiracy theorist. Her nickname here is "Chemtrail Kelly".
McCain is facing the fight of his career this Nov. He has the advantage of being the incumbent but he is vulnerable. He currently leads in the polls, but with a 2 percentage point edge on average vs. our Dem. candidate, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.
I've been phone banking for Kirkpatrick and other AZ Dem. candidates. We are working hard to turn AZ blue!

(20,816 posts)but I certainly hope he loses the general election. I think the Democrat may actually have a good chance. McCain's primary opponent was a real tea nutter, though, and she may have been easier to beat in the general.
