US high court refuses to reinstate North Carolina voter ID

RALEIGH, N.C.
A divided U.S. Supreme Court refused Wednesday to reinstate North Carolinas voter identification requirement and keep just 10 days of early in-person voting. The court rejected a request by Gov. Pat McCrory and other state officials to delay a lower court ruling that found the state law was tainted by racial discrimination.
The decision a victory for voting rights groups and President Barack Obamas Justice Department means voters wont have to show one of several qualifying photo IDs when casting ballots in the presidential battleground state. Early voting also reverts to 17 days, to begin Oct. 20.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down several parts of the law last month, saying they were approved by Republican legislators with intentional bias against black voters in mind. Lawyers for McCrory and the state officials some hired by GOP legislative leaders who championed the 2013 law disagreed with the 4th Circuit ruling and wanted a delay while they draft an appeal on legal arguments they want the Supreme Court to consider.
The high court divided 4-4 on most of the challenged provisions, with the four more conservative justices supporting the states bid to enforce them in the upcoming election. The split illustrates again how closely divided the Supreme Court is on voting rights and how the outcome of the presidential election essentially will determine the direction of the court.

Thank goodness North Carolina racists lost this nasty effort.

4-4 deadlock. If Scalia was still alive, then the NC GOP's craptastic Monster Voter Suppression Bill would be too. Let's be CERTAIN they don't get a chance to do this to us again. GOTV!

(7,675 posts)America with a right leaning court
An eight member court brings out in high relief that in terms of civil rights it is us vs them, being people who believe in civil rights vs the altright who want to restrict them in favor of white corporate power enforced by extremist populism
We need Hillary, a Dem Senate and a Dem House to get the court moving in the direction of increasing and strength ing the right to vote. The movement by the Republican Governor's Association to restrict access to the ballot box by minorities and gerrymander congressional districts in order to favor the GOP has got to stop once and for all
What the US needs is for the electoral process to be taken out of the hands of corrupt state politicians and handed over to an truly independent Federal Election Board

(2,198 posts)It was great news for my state. The write up in the Winston-Salem Journal was awesome and brutally laid out how the Repubs tried to gut voting in my states. Tried and failed this time. With some luck we can flip the Senate this election cycle and return to a Blue or at least dark purple state .

Or does each state have to be decided individually?
The morans in this state keep trying and may have passed
a similar law and over-rided(sp?) the veto.
And they're proud of it.
