Labor Board Orders Volkswagen to Begin Bargaining With UAW
Source: Associated Press
The National Labor Relations Board is ordering Volkswagen to engage in bargaining with a group of skilled-trades workers who voted to be represented by the United Auto Workers union at the German automaker's lone U.S. plant in Tennessee.
According to unanimous order released Wednesday, Volkswagen's rejection of an earlier ruling in favor of the UAW at the plant "constitutes an unlawful failure and refusal to recognize and bargain."
UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel said the order shows that Volkswagen has been "operating in violation of federal law by refusing to come to the bargaining table."
"As Volkswagen slowly emerges from the global emissions scandal, the company also has an opportunity to improve employee relations in the U.S.," Casteel said. "We urge Volkswagen to accept the NLRB order and bargain with the local union at the earliest possible date."

(11,949 posts)But it is not in his state. One south.
And I hope it does. In Germany, they have unions reps on their board of directors. Labor is considered an integral part of a company there. And their well being is as important as stockholder profits. Of course, labor is still respected in most of Europe. Not like here were the right has spread the lie that if you do physical work you are lazy or stupid. Makes me so mad I could spit!!

(34,661 posts)Our Teamster local had two members on the BOD at two of the largest storage warehouses in the Upper Midwest. When it came to contract negotiations, always consideration coming from the management reps concerning the Guy on the shop floor. Sad to say those days are History. All but one of our shops remain today and they still have a Union Person on the Board. BTW,they have the highest profit per square foot and the lowest turnover in the Industry.
Remember,McConnell had his friends interrupt VW's organizing. And the Rethugs threatened to defund NLRB if they pushed back.

I thought it was the governor of Tennessee where there plant is. Not that it really matters. The jist is that they even threatened VW not to allow unionization. Good so see it happening now.
I am actually a manager in a unionized company in a right to work state. But was a worker for 10 years. I keep my opinions to myself with my peers, but my guys know where I stand.
Have a great evening.

(34,661 posts)do recall a Senator going stupid and threatening people.
Tough job doing a Union Plant in a work for less state. Amazing how a small minority crab and complain about their Union dues but they sure like those rashes and bennies.

(11,949 posts)But labor and management get along ok. It helps that most managers were workers for well over 5 years. But there is no doubt it is an adversarial relationship and in a WTW state management has most of the power.
Have a great evening.

(34,661 posts)Understand what you say. Did a stint at my former employers branch in a WTW state. Different attitude among workers, seemed to need direction and redirection continuously. In our Union Shop, the shop floor rarely did you see this happen. Our production per man hour was double digits in percentage compared to the WTW shop. Their again, appeared the hiring standards was just get the job done.
As far as V-Dub,hope they go Union Shop full bore. Watched the standard of living just go in the dumper in so many of the WTW states, has to change, sad that they seem to vote against their best interests.

(4,973 posts)that Volkswagen, a corp who is mostly unionized in Germany, thinks they can get away with being anti-union in the US. Our Congress really sucks.

That's the only bright spot. However, if we don't start getting rid of the anti-labor sentiment in the congress, this will keep getting worse.
All R's and too many D's in Congress display nothing but contempt for labor.
It's great to read some good news from the NLRB though.
