Kansas City Bishop Convicted of Shielding Pedophile Priest

Source: NY Times

Bishop Robert W. Finn was found guilty on Thursday on one count of failing to report suspected child abuse, becoming the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States in the decades-long sexual abuse scandals to be convicted of shielding a pedophile priest.

In an abruptly announced bench trial that lasted a little over an hour, Judge John M. Torrence of Jackson County Circuit Court found Bishop Finn guilty of one misdemeanor charge, and not guilty on a second. The charges each carried a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, but Bishop Finn received a sentence of two years of court-supervised probation.

It was a sudden ending to a case that has consumed the church in Kansas City and threatened to turn into a sensational, first-ever trial of a sitting prelate. The case had been scheduled for a jury trial later this month, but on Wednesday the prosecution announced that it would be decided in one afternoon before a judge.

Bishop Finn said in court before he was sentenced, “I am pleased and grateful that the prosecution and the courts have allowed this matter to be completed. The protection of children is paramount.”

Not perfect, not by a long shot, but at least we're starting to see more prosecutions of these people.

It is straight-up aiding and abetting, and they have been getting away with it for FAR too long.

Opus Dei is the driving force behind the shielding of unholy priests who never should have been ordained. They're also pulling the strings of the bishops, cardinals, and even the Pope in their efforts to drive Catholics to their left from the Church.

Thank God Bishop Finn was convicted as the pedophile abetter he is.

They are intent in driving out any Catholic who doesn't agree with their extreme irrational agenda. The result will be that the Catholic Church will be turned into nothing more than a cult. The new leadership is totally concentrating their efforts on two issues, absolute condemnation of abortion and contraception without any exceptions. The reality is that the leadership has been hijacked by some of the most radical extremists who are totally out of touch with the laity. If there is not a dramatic change the future of the Catholic Church will be relegated to nothing more than an obscure abnormally that will be disregarded as of no importance. Pope John XXIII vision of a dynamic church that would be a voice in modern society has been totally lost on these Neanderthals.

Once they were persona non grata -- now it seems they're being welcomed and encouraged to take over.

Such as having to meet with his parole officer regularly and having a warrant issued if he does not show, being required to abstain from alcohol etc.
