President Obama: Voters face 'clearest choice' in a generation

Source: USA Today

President Obama framed his election bid as a clear choice between two different paths for America" Thursday night. He closed the Democratic National Convention by contending his roadmap to right America was better suited to a broader cross-section of the country than that of Republican Mitt Romney.

I know that campaigns can seem small, and even silly. Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites. And the truth gets buried under an avalanche of money and advertising. If you're sick of hearing me approve this message, believe me - so am I,'' Obama told a packed Time Warner Cable Arena and primetime TV audience. But when all is said and done - when you pick up that ballot to vote - you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation.

Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs and the economy; taxes and deficits; energy and education; war and peace — decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children's lives for decades to come. On every issue, the choice you face won't be just between two candidates or two parties. two different paths for America. It will be a choice between two different paths for America. A choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future.

I'm no longer a just a candidate, I'm the president. I know what it means to send young Americans into battle, for I have held in my arms the mothers and fathers of those who didn't return. I've shared the pain of families who've lost their homes, and the frustration of workers who've lost their jobs.

Petty was pleasantly surprised on Wednesday night, when his song "I Won't Back Down" played as President Obama walked onstage at the Democratic National Convention, after former President Bill Clinton's speech. "I got chills," said Petty. "They knew it would be okay. I've had a chance to meet the President and talk to him about the music he listens to."

The polling shouldn't even be this close between him and Romney. I just don't get the mindset of people who would rather vote for a candidate who opposed ending the Iraq War, wants to raise taxes on lower-income Americans, and apparently still lives in the Cold War era. It's as if Republicans live in a parallel universe from us.
