R.E.M.: Fox News Not Authorized To Use 'Losing My Religion' During DNC Coverage

Source: Huffington Post

R.E.M. is the latest music act to request that its songs not be played in a political context.

The band -- which broke up last September after 31 years together -- released a statement on their website denouncing Fox News for playing its seminal hit "Losing My Religion" during coverage of the Democratic National Convention.

"We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage," R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe said in the statement. "Our music does not belong there." R.E.M. said that Fox News is not authorized or licensed to use the song -- a cheeky way for the cable news network to comment on the perceived lack of faith at the DNC -- in the future.

R.E.M. is far from the first band to push-back against Republicans during election season. The Silversun Pickups sent Mitt Romney's campaign a cease-and-desist letter after the Republican candidate for president used their song "Panic Switch" during a campaign event.

And Michael Stipe is correct. Their music does NOT belong on an outlet like Pox Noise. Anymore than chris christie belongs backstage at a Bruce Springsteen concert or "sippy cupp" belongs on MSNBC.

hardly. think this is the first time I've heard of a band going after a news station for playing music. they all do. albeit the RIAA checks with it's fans first before finding out if the Networks have the right to play the music. X_X

Mr. Stipe was a nice guy back when I would run into on occasion in Athens, Georgia, years ago. Their lawyer/manager B. E. Downs is both smart and kind. I can only imagine the disgust of R.E.M.'s members upon discovery of this inappropriate appropriation and misuse of their property.

Fox and the Republicans truly has no respect for the property rights of others.

That a political party steals a band's song, it's the republinazi party. And they keep on with their lies about being the "law and order party".

Don't think that would have happened, for some reason.
