Pelosi invites Trump to give State of the Union on Jan. 29

Source: Axios

New Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has invited President Trump to deliver a State of the Union address on Jan. 29.

The big picture: The Democrats took control of the House Thursday as the 116th Congress was sworn into office. A partial government shutdown remains in effect and is likely to continue for the foreseeable future as both sides dig in on the issue of funding for President Trump's border wall.

The Constitution requires the President to report the state of the Union to Congress "from time to time." (US Const. Article II, Section 3, Clause 1.) In the distant past, the President would report in writing. In living memory, the report has been made to a joint session of Congress.

And yes, it will be a shite show.

...Trump decides to go back to the original way and sends a written report on the state of union, instead of a speech?

He is such a coward that I could imagine him seeking a way to get out of addressing the Congress and American people. It also would be a way to generate attention.

On the other hand, he does love to be on TV and to have a captive audience.

He certainly is a coward but there is no way he will pass up on a nationally televised speech.

If I was his lawyer (God forbid), I would insist on a written report which I had carefully edited.

during a State of the Union Address made by President Obama. I've always wondered why Palosi didn't stand, say, "Excuse me, Mr. President", and order the Sergeant at Arms to remove the miscreant from the room. Perhaps a good round of "You lie!" will be in order during a Trump SOU. At least no one could ever deny the truth of that claim in such an occurence.

For his able teleprompter performance, without going off script?

You bet he'll be champing at the bit for an encore.
