House approves new Dem rules package

Source: The Hill

The House on Thursday approved a Democratic rules package with just a few defections from progressives despite concerns on the left about the resolution's "pay-as-you-go" provision.

The rules were approved by a largely party-line vote of 234-197. The House will take up two additional portions of the package in coming days.

The architects of the package -- which was unveiled by new Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern (D-Mass) earlier this week -- said it will promote diversity and help fight the deficit.

Under the new rules, lawmakers and House employees are barred from discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Members and staff are also be permitted to wear religious headgear in the House chamber.

Three Democrats (Khanna, Gabbard, and Cortez) voted against this rules package and three republicans (Reed, Katko, and Fitzpatrick) voted for it.

The co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) voted for it since they correctly realize that the "Paygo" provision allows it to be waived. It also allows tax increases to pay for programs in lieu of cuts elsewhere.

is from PA-1 (old PA-8), which is swing and should have gone to a Democrat if we had ratcheted up turnout a bit more there. In 2006 & 2008, that district as PA-8 (where the old version and newly redrawn version were almost identical) had been Democratic and held by Patrick Murphy, an early Obama supporter.

The U.S. Treasury Department says that the national debt has increased by $2 trillion ($2,000,000,000,000) since President Trump took office on Jan. 20, 2017. That's with Republicans in control of the House and Senate. The national debt is now almost $22 trillion.

Little secret- look at the trends and you will see that Republicans are not and will never be the party of fiscal conservatism.... Period.

That said, such an uncompromising stalwart can be an important ally.

She's a bit of an enigma, but I'm thankful she's on our side (most of the time).

tax cut bill of 2017. Since the cuts overwhelmingly benefitted those who need them least, it should be a fairly easy sales job to trade affordable, accessible, known-quantity health insurance and healthcare for everyone for raising taxes back up for the very richest Americans and to close corporate tax loopholes.

I just wish everyone had throughly read the legislation before voting. But, I'm willing to give the rookies a chance to figure it all out. Legislating isn't easy and there's a lot of reading and learning involved.
