Tarrant County GOP set to vote on whether to remove vice-chairman because he's Muslim

Source: Texas Tribune

Shahid Shafi identifies as a Republican because of his firm belief in small government, lower taxes and secure borders. But his commitment to core GOP values hasn’t shielded him from ire within his own party.

A group of Tarrant County Republicans will vote Thursday evening on whether to remove Shafi as vice-chairman of the county party after a small faction of members put forth a formal motion to oust him because he's Muslim.

Those in favor of the motion to recall Shafi, a trauma surgeon and member of the Southlake City Council, have said he doesn’t represent all Tarrant County Republicans. They've also said Islamic ideologies run counter to the U.S. Constitution — an assertion many Texas GOP officials have called bigoted and Shafi himself has vehemently denied.

He makes a lot of money and except for the different brand of god they believe in the core beliefs of fundamental right wing Christians are not really different than fundamental right wing Muslims.

Oppression of women, gays and nonbelievers.

I’m pretty sure he’s not a fundamental anything. From what I can tell he’s either irreligious or keeps it to himself.

I can’t say that about the few behind the effort to run him out as the woman behind most of it is a special kind of stupid.

But I can’t consider a guy running for a leadership position in the Republican Party as a total victim.

At a certain point I would think the hate would run off someone even if they bought into the republican economic message.

And he obviously is in line with their social views regardless of how vocal he is on the matter. He wants to be one of them.

I grew up with and have family who are fundamentalist Christians. They will never accept him.

Frankly, I’m surprised the GOP hasn’t sent out a mailer to all coloured, gay, and non- Xtian members requesting that they suicide themselves for the benefit of party purity.

Obviously these assholes have always been there, but before there always seemed to have been at least some counter balance in the GOP. I guess this what happens when anyone with sense of decency flees the party and it all that remain are the kooks.

If anyone is interested, here's the FB page of the lady leading this. Her bigotry is on full display there.

Can only imagine what life must be like living in a state teeming with these critters. It must be hell.

They are the ones who rejoice whenever there's a capital execution. Probably observe it with "ice cream socials" preceded by prayers of thanksgiving.

What a look into a culture of determined haters.

Thanks, a lot.

The surgeon might thank them, one day, for allowing him to remain outside their circle of "friendship."

Not allowed in the Democratic Party...

We are actually somewhat regulated by the state.

If anything TRP by-laws probably do not allow secret ballots.

But polical parties are like religious groups. Can’t successfully sue a church for kicking out a person for their beliefs.

And where my extended family lives in rural North Louisiana the Republican Party and fundamentalists Christians are one and the same. If you aren’t a good Baptist, Pentecostal or some such you are not welcome. I mean, they might be nice to you. But only a matter of time before someone tells you ‘we are praying for you’.

granted, it's a county-level branch of the Republican party, which is nominally a private institution. on the other hand, religious bigotry is explicitly eschewed by the constitution, maybe county-level party officers are considered close enough to government to have the "no religious test" apply? or maybe this can be construed as an equal-protection violation?

Tea Party nut Cynthia Brehm wins county chair.

Supports bathroom bills 100%. Wants to do away with polling sites in public schools etc etc etc etc.

Then this:

U.S. Army court documents revealed appalling new details about the government’s evidence against Norman Brehm, a retired lieutenant colonel and Cynthia Brehm’s husband of 22 years. The documents show that Cynthia Brehm was informed about details of her husband’s case as it unfolded and benefited from its outcome.

According to the documents, Norman Brehm gave a “full confession” detailing not only “indecent liberties” taken in 1999 with Cynthia Brehm’s then-14-year-old daughter from a previous marriage but also describing more than 10 years of “egregious sexual molestation” of three young relatives.

These descriptions are horrific.

Norman Brehm began “conditioning” one girl when she was 5 years old, the documents state.

You are a member of the TRUMP PARTY Doc.
