Muslim vice-chair of Texas county GOP survives effort to oust him over his religion

Source: USA Today

Doug Stanglin, USA TODAY Published 8:52 a.m. ET Jan. 11, 2019

An attempt by a faction of the Tarrant County Republican party in Texas to oust its vice-chairman because he is a Muslim failed in an emotional party vote Thursday night.

Shahid Shafi, a trauma surgeon and city council member, was backed in a 139-49 vote after more than two hours of closed door discussions. Cheers could be heard outside as the results were read.
dicine in the United States and became a naturalized citizen in 2009.

As the meeting gathered Thursday night, one of his chief critics, Sara Legvold, former member of the Texas State Republican Executive Committee, stood outside dressed in a black burqa to underscore her opposition to Shafi's appointment.

“You already see it in the workplace where Muslims demand they’re able to wear their hijab and demand they get a prayer room,” she said, according to the Texas Tribune. “When was the last time a Christian was allowed to have a separate place to say their prayers?"

everyone else every time you turn around. How much complaining would there be if there were a separate place for Christians and they felt like they were being forced to use that as the only place they could pray?

Legvold is of Cuban descent, a refugee from the current Cuban government. She is in her mid 50s and came to this country when she was a little girl. According to reports, Legvold is “originally from Cuba and now a naturalized U.S. citizen living in Keller.”

by Christopher Hooks, Jun 18, 2014

Sara Legvold, front left, gets ready to offer a motion at the Texas Republican Party's 2014 convention.

Here are some things that Legvold believes. In just the last couple months, Legvold has characterized Muslims as “vermin,” “threats” and breeders and cheered the efforts of the British fascist party Britain First. She expressed her belief that Muslim fighters in Syria are selling the blood of exsanguinated Christian children for “$100,000 per bottle.” She calls New Jersey Governor Chris Christie a “fat POS” and a “Muslim Dhimmi,” calls for GOP House Speaker John Boehner to be jailed for collaborating with President Obama, and calls for Bowe Bergdahl to be executed.

She warns her friends about the specter of racial violence—she links to a World Net Daily article, headline: “House torched in black-on-white revenge attack,” and exhorts like-minded friends to pack heat and “make sure your aim is true and deadly.” She indulges in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, crediting Russian President Vladimir Putin with taking action against the Rothschild banking family.

She urges “real Americans” to stand up to “crimmigrants” who want to latch on to the “government teat.” On the question of gay people, she quotes from a blog approvingly: “Homosexuals have a lot in common with the little dogs people like Paris Hilton hold in purses: they’re generally vain, generally high maintenance, and their bark is always far louder and more obnoxious than their bite.” Homosexuality, she says, is a precursor to socialism.

It is disturbing that over one third of the city council voted to oust a city council member simply because of their religion.

It still is hard to fathom in 2019 but there it is, a cancer on our democracy for all to see, no amount of rationalizations or obfuscations can cover up. Just plain old hate-filled, ignorant bigotry.

When is this crap going to end? Every day I wake up to read about absurd things coming out of the mouths of tyrannical Republicans, filled with the hate that is fueling dissension and discord in our country. It’s really tiring, aggravating, and quite un-nerving.

These people are truly sick, though they don’t see it that way. After all this time, starting with the acrimony toward Obama, through the ugly past two years of attempted autocratic rule on the part of the Beloved Exalted Orange Leader’s third grade leadership, we continue in a downward spiral, getting worse by the day with no good outcome in sight.

Not to sound too conspiratorial, but is this not only part of Putin’s ownership of Trump, but the grand plan of the Republican Party as a whole? Is this their goal - to work in conjunction with the Oval Office for the conversion to Autocratic rule - hate any and all non-whites, denigrate women, kill education to keep us stupid and easier to control, demolish the environment to create their own clan of chemical and mineral oligarchs, rig elections so as to never yield control?

Is there an agency with “A” in it (CIA, NSA, .....) ready or willing to counter this offensive to save America from the greatest threat in which America we have been immersed? I’d sure as shit like to think so. Not being very religious, I’d even pray for something to right the course of this ship, and soon. God help us all.

We used to board horses there back when it was mostly scrub cedar ranch land. Now it's covered with suburban rooftops as far as the eye can see, and I guarantee you that the vote would've been completely different if this hadn't become national news.
