PHILADELPHIA (AP) A former Philadelphia police officer was ordered to serve 3 to 12 months in county jail for killing a man while drag racing with another officer two years ago.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Adam Soto fought back tears Friday while begging for forgiveness from the victim's family during his sentencing.
Soto, who was fired shortly after the Jan. 31, 2017, crash, pleaded guilty in October to a felony charge of homicide by vehicle and a misdemeanor charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Authorities say Soto was speeding near a high school when he hit 50-year-old Daniel Dimitri.

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Authorities say a Philadelphia police officer has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a local chef in January.
According to investigators, on January 31 11:30 a.m., off-duty Philadelphia police officer Adam Soto was traveling eastbound on Cottman Avenue at a high rate of speed when he came in contact with a pedestrian who was reportedly running across the street. The victim, 50-year-old Daniel Dimitri, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Through further investigation, it was discovered that another off-duty officer was operating his personal vehicle recklessly at the same time and in the same direction as Officer Soto, according to police. As a result of this investigation Officer Adam Soto, 24, and a 3-year veteran of the department assigned to the 24th District, was arrested charged with Homicide by Vehicle and Involuntary Manslaughter.
Another officer assigned to the 14th District was not charged criminally; however, he has been charged with departmental violations for his involvement.

(2,748 posts)iF he did not leave the scene of the crime and did his best to help the victim.
Horrible mistake with enormous consequences for all involved, but probably no ill intent toward the victim.
If he has served his community well up to that point, and taking into account that he has a family to support, maybe requiring him to do considerable presentations to high school drivers about the dangers of drag racing would be more useful than spending years in jail.

(20,174 posts)He killed a man and is getting a MAXIMUM sentence of a year. You say he has a family to support. If you ask me, he needs to support the family of the man he killed for the rest of his life. As a cop, he is supposed to enforce the law, not break it.

(2,748 posts)And I agree that justice would have him help support his victims family. A civil suit against him might prescribe a remedy for that. But he wont be able to do that while he is in prison.
But why do you both assume I would show him some mercy because hes a cop? If you re-read my response I dont think I said or implied that at all.
