GoFundMe refunding entirety of $20 million "Build the Wall" campaign
Source: Axios
GoFundMe is refunding all $20 million that was raised for the "Build the Wall" campaign, after the man who started broke his promise of returning donor money if the campaign didn't reach its goal," BuzzFeed News' Brianna Sacks reports.
Details: The GoFundMe, which had a $1 billion target, was started by veteran Brian Kolfage. Kolfage wrote on the campaign's page that after consultation with experts, he decided to take the $20 million raised and form a non-profit called "We Build the Wall, Inc." in order to complete segments of the wall for lower costs than the government has estimated. A GoFundMe spokesman responded by saying that unless the donors make it clear they want their funds to be directed to the non-profit, "they will automatically receive a full refund."

(26,046 posts)That, he would give the money to some wingnut non-profit if they didn't reach $1 billion or if the government coulnd't take the money. So, within the first few days, he publicly said on GFM he was breaking the TOS.
He also doesn't explain in his latest update how 1. they can take land to build the wall 2. build a wall on a national border, which is illegal, and which Mexico won't allow 3. how they are building a wall even if 1 and 2 were legal, and 4. how much of the money os going to teh fake wall.
question everything

A decorated veteran who raised more than $20 million to finance construction of a wall along the southern U.S. border has announced that he will instead use the money to finance a new nonprofit group that will build the wall itselfor at least a couple miles of it.
Brian Kolfages crowdfunding campaign on the website GoFundMe went viral in December, before news outlets uncovered previous instances in which the triple-amputee veteran appeared to have pocketed funds raised through similar, if far smaller, campaigns billed as efforts to assist wounded warriors.
Now Kolfage, a prolific operator of conspiracy theory Facebook pages, has recruited a team of prominent figures in President Donald Trumps orbit to run a new 501(c)(4) nonprofit, named We Fund The Wall, to do some wall construction of its own. The new groups board, Kolfage announced on Friday, includes Erik Prince, the founder of infamous military contract Blackwater; David Clarke, the former scandal-plagued sheriff of Milwaukee County; Fox News contributor Sara Carter; Tom Tancredo, an immigration hardliner and former Colorado congressman; and former Kansas Secretary of State and voter fraud crusader Kris Kobach
I joined the organization because its mission is of the highest importance to our country, Kobach told The Daily Beast. The wall needs to be completed, and it needs to be done as soon as possible. The best way to accomplish that is through a combination of both public and private efforts.
QUESTIONABLE
NBC: Man Behind Border Wall GoFundMe Ran Fake News Websites
The groups formation comes amidst heated fighting in Washington over financing for Trumps border wall. A partial shutdown of the federal government has persisted for nearly three weeks as Trump and Democratic congressional leaders spar over the formers demands for more than $5 billion in border wall funding.
Kolfages fundraising campaign was initially designed to help finance that construction with private contributions. He insisted that he had been in contact with a number of federal officials and members of Congress devising ways to funnel the massive amounts of money raised on GoFundMe to the federal treasury....................................
It appears that that plan went awry..................
