Source: Mediaite

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced today he is officially suspending Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

In his press conference today, DeSantis said, “The neglect of duty and the incompetence that was connected to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been well-documented, and I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel’s political grave. Just suffice it to say, the massacre might never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the Sheriff’s Department.”

The governor’s executive order [PDF] excoriates Israel not just over the horrific Parkland shooting, but for similar failures and lack of leadership regarding the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in 2017.

DeSantis named former Coral Springs Sgt. Gregory Tony as Israel’s replacement:

the financial help was entirely legal and the Sheriff while under public criticism wasn't under any sanction or investigation. We try not to hang them before we try them.

the sheriff was elected as a Democrat! The new gov gets to put in someone who is likely a Republican. Voter's will is thwarted. Terrible!

Even a majority of NRA members favor "common sense " gun laws, like universal background checks, but NRA leadership opposes universal background checks, as well as closing the gun-show loophole.

could have done to prevent the massacre. This is nothing but a smoke screen to avoid facing the fact that Florida needs to enact sane gun laws.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The commission investigating a Florida high school massacre heavily criticized the responding sheriff office’s active shooter policy Thursday, saying it contributed to the failure of some deputies to run into the building and confront the gunman.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission found Thursday that Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel’s policy that deputies “may” confront active shooters rather than “shall” gave some an excuse for not entering the building during the Feb. 14 massacre that left 17 dead. The commission found that several deputies arrived at the school during the shooting but stayed outside, including Scot Peterson, who was assigned to the school.

There was nothing the Sheriffs Office could have done. By the time the other officers got to the school the gunman was gone. This is nothing more than scapegoating the sheriffs office so DeSantis can reverse the gun laws Scott passed shortly before leaving office which he has already said he wants to do.
