(476 posts)I'm a webmaster for a site that uses GoDaddy as a host, I was in the middle of doing some major pushes to the website and marketing some upcoming events when suddenly I was getting DNS errors. GoDaddy is down as are all the sites they host and I am panicking that my 7 hours of work today is now gone.

Fortunately, I was listening to NPR news and heard about the outage so I could respond to the callers.

(9,696 posts)Their "customer service" people are ALL sales people. They won't let you talk to tech support, you have to go through a "customer (sales) service" person. Support varies from slow to incorrect.
Their back end interface is bloated and convoluted, and those are two of the nicer words I use when working in it.
Oh, and aside from all the constant upselling, they are also more expensive.
go daddy, go away, go far far away!

(19,458 posts)Frankly, I'm just happy to talk to tech folks in AMERICA. unlike the other providers. They're unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable. I love GoDaddy... they're cheap and reliable... until some assholes in Mommy's basement decides to take them out.
Merlot
(9,696 posts)and that they won't let you talk to the real tech support people. I've been working with them for over a year.
I'm currently managing over 200 sites for a customer so have had a lot of interaction with them. Compared to other ISP's, they are more expensive, and take more of my time than any other ISP I have worked with.
And on at least 70% of the calls have included a soft sell for additional products.

There are some pretty HUGE businesses like that.
(Just my pet peeve against the term 'small business'.)

I guess I lucked out today because I don't currently have any clients hosted there.

I was terrified about the result but it is actually better service and far better support than my previous provider.

(19,458 posts)unless some assholes like Anonymous take them out like today.
I never have outages, the mail gets through, the price is good. And I actually get tech support IN AMERICA, for FREE, when I call.
Sorry, but after having dealt with other hosting companies and their unintelligible tech support in India.. and non support, I'll stick with GoDaddy.
Merlot
(9,696 posts)and they aren't sales people, unlike godaddy.
Their pricing is actually more expensive than anything I've ever purchased, and if you start to talk to them, they WILL try to upsell you.
I stand by my analysis, godaddy sucks.

(19,458 posts).. from your upper middle class parent's basement. Fuck you. I'm waiting to hear about a job, and projects i'm working on.
Oh, and FUCK YOU. I'm so tired of these spoilt young angst-filled upper middle class twits who think that trashing things like this is somehow a big message or some way that they're changing the world. All you're doing is fucking over the little people. Yeah.. small business people, who use GoDaddy because it's CHEAP. You're not hurting GoDaddy you assholes...you're hurting the people who depend on them for their small business. GodDaddy still gets their money for hosting, but it's US, the little people who are hurt.
Did I make it clear? Fuck you. Go charge a latte on your parent's AMex, and choke on the foam.

(792 posts)I was working on my genealogy site when it crashed, and have been somewhat stressed since. I didn't know what happened. Had tried godaddy.com and it was down too. I decided to check in on DU and catch up on politics and saw the headline! OHHH! LOL I have genealogy and photography data tables on my site, and they're all down. Real bummer. My condolences to you guys whose income depends on your sites. Curiously, my htm pages are all working, though. I'm optimistic that they'll get it all back. Damn shame somebody would deliberately do this - clearly hurting an awful lot of regular people a lot more than the company.
As far as the comments on experiences with GoDaddy's customer service concerned, personally I have nothing but praises. The guys who answer the phone have always been very helpful and professional and gone the extra mile to help me out, kind, courteous, and bring things down to my level of expertise. Granted, I only have the economy site and my problems have been probably elementary stuff; but they made me feel like a valued customer. And they've never tried to pressure me to buy anything.
