One can look at the Speaker of the House votes (and alternates who were voted for) to get an idea of other potentials.

(14,153 posts)To smear such a large percent of Democrats who support Bernie's more progressive platform. At one time 48% of Democrats during the last primaries, is just awful IMO.
To use the word "cult". Really? Do you really believe that or is it just for a good snicker?
Do we have to speak slower? Here it is....Bernie supporters, in the last primary, supported his POLICIES. We were thrilled that there was a choice to choose someone who hasn't wavered in his views for decades, as some others have "evolved". We agreed with his positions not his personality.
Do you honestly think a disheveled cranky old man fits the bill for being a cult leader? Does his shouty repetitive sloganeering speeches equate him with a brilliant orator that no matter what he says can enthrall audiences? (Obama and even Trump are even better at that)
So....to answer your insinuation....if a younger more dynamic candidate with much the same progressive principles stepped forward, I'd be stoked. Perhaps Kamala Harris. I'd rather Bernie not HAVE to run. I'd rather he has someone he can put his support behind that is younger, and also not beholden to big business donors. And I think most previous Sanders supporters would agree with that.
The cult-like persistence in support is for these more bolder progressive initiatives and the belief that it can be accomplished in our lifetime. Not following preconceived narratives like saying single payer "its not going to happen" because big Pharma and Insurers tell you that, but pushing the conversation forward in the belief that leaders, like Sanders, are not afraid of the chicken little's laughing at them about rainbows and unicorns, and know that someimes a leader has to be ahead of the crowd. Like those that fought for equal marriage rights, or pot legalization, before the majority caught on.
Sanders has contributed to moving the conversation forward. He even pushed Hillary to include a more progressive agenda into her platform. He is relentless in speaking out for truth against power. So much so many are sick of seeing him on TV. Oh right... even that he shows himself in public too much is a point of contention to the grumblers. Tell that to MLK, or Ghandi, or even just any number of politicians.....is it a lust for popularity that compels leaders to stand up and speak, or is it......gasp...that they actually believe in what they are saying? That they think its important to get that message out, even if it's themselves that must do it? And when they do, if it rings true, they will have followers that champion that leader. Its not a cult. Its that that leader encompasses the direction that their supporters agree with.
But personally I think Sanders should step down. America had a once in a lifetime opportunity last time to nominate a true progressive that would have beaten Trump if he'd have had the opportunity. Taking into consideration that he had rust belt support, add to that he did not have to deal with the shit fake news smear takedown, and Comey, that Hillary had to.
But that opportunity is probably, sadly, past. We need new younger, more relatable candidates that will carry on fighting for the same issues that Bernie has long fought for.

(30,793 posts)"Bernie supporters, in the last primary, supported his POLICIES."
So now that we will have "new younger, more relatable candidates that will carry on fighting for the same issues that Bernie has long fought for", those who continue to insist that Bernie is the one and only candidate they can support for 2020, in my opinion, reveal their support to be of a cultlike nature, as I stated.
I don't see that much on DU any longer but I have several friends on Facebook who don't seem to be able to entertain the idea of new progressive candidates.
I probably stated it clumsily.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,153 posts)But I think anyone, unlike you or I, that worships the man, Bernie Sanders, because of some kind of cult of personality, this cantankerous old man(!), even as far as rejecting any new more left rising stars that are emerging in the Democratic party, then I'd say they are in a very small minority. An inconsequential minority. Especially if Sanders doesn't run but endorses one of those more progressive new voices, and they still insist on Bernie or nothing. I just don't see it.
And perpetrating that myth is only feeding the Sanders/progressive bashers who are, even if inadvertently, dividing our party.
cheers

Kind of cool to watch. Nice to see the adults with fine reputations and strong records of achievement in public office talk to the American people calmly and sanely. It really helps at a time when we are SO SICK of trump...

(37,648 posts)I don't think that should be a requirement, but I understand why some feel that way.
I'm not seeing anyone I'm excited about yet, or who I think would do a great job or be the right person. They're all either toast before they start, or mediocre.
Maybe some will seem better, when debates start. I don't favor senators for Presidential candidates, unless they were on track for being President before, and did just a short stint in the Senate. JFK, Obama.
Long term Senators have too much to attack. When you're in Congress, you have to vote for bills in their entirety, sometimes leading to voting for something good that has objectionable parts, or against something bad even though it has a good part. Ads can make those votes seem like something else.

It's a pretty damaging article, if true. One of the concerning things is that...she pins her opinions and stances on what the public opinion is at that time. She's hesitant to verbalize a change of opinion or stance before, and unless, everyone else does first. That's not what a leader usually does.
I don't know much about her, so my mind is open. Although I don't take to her, right off the bat, like I have w/other politicians.

Before anyone gets confused, *NO*, this is NOT a legit, innocent, "just wondering" question. This is agitprop trolling of the highest order. And he isn't the only emoprog hot take merchant peddling this bullshit, either.
I guess smearing Harris as a "cop" wasn't getting any traction so it's time to play the race/birth certificate card?
