Google has been fined nearly $57 million by French regulators for violating Europes tough new data-privacy rules, marking the first major penalty brought against a U.S. tech giant since the region-wide regulations took effect last year.
Frances top data-privacy agency, known as the CNIL, said Monday that Google failed to fully disclose to users how their personal information is collected and what happens to it. Google also did not properly obtain users consent for the purpose of showing them personalized ads, the watchdog agency said.
Together, French regulators said Googles business practices had run afoul of the General Data Protection Regulation. Implemented in 2018, the sweeping new privacy rules have set a global standard that has forced Google and its tech peers in Silicon Valley to rethink their data-collection practices or risk sky-high fines.
Despite Googles changes, the CNIL said in a statement that the infringements observed deprive the users of essential guarantees regarding processing operations that can reveal important parts of their private life since they are based on a huge amount of data, a wide variety of services and almost unlimited possible combinations.

(8,804 posts)Walgreens was caught selling customers PRESCRIPTION information, along with all the customers personal info.
Not once, but twice...........
The amount they were fined was a pittance compared to the amount they made selling the info.
Some one at Walgreens, laughingly said that the fines were able to be written off the company's taxes.

(2,161 posts)Walgreen's is an American company who is confined by American laws. In America, corporations are more important than consumers.
Google operates internationally, and fell afoul of European law. In Europe, consumers are more important than companies.

(5 posts)It took Google 13 HOURS to earn enough profit to pay this fine. Maybe $ 570 million they might have noticed but as their posted PROFIT is $9.4 BILLION per quarter that works out to $104 MILLION PROFIT A DAY.
