India police fire at nuclear protesters, killing 1

Source: Associated Press

State officials say Indian police have fired at protesters near a nuclear power plant being constructed in southern India, killing one person.

The Tamil Nadu state government says police fired Monday to disperse about 2,000 people who were demonstrating against the loading of nuclear fuel in the Russian-built reactor. It says the protesters threw stones and sticks at police near the Kudankulam Atomic Power Project, and five officers were injured.

Construction of the plant has been delayed by protests in the past year by residents and anti-nuclear groups concerned about safety following the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan last year.

The government says the plant, about 700 kilometers (440 miles) south of Chennai, the state capital, will meet safety standards.

insane. A nuclear power plant is killing people already and it's not even on line yet. Big money buys many guns and they are using them on people who don't want this poison in their back yard. And more than one died, I bet. Bhopal, anyone remember that one? Yeah on the safety standards, I'm sure Fukushima met em also.

The police said a 44-year-old fisherman was killed when they fired at a mob that clashed with them in Manapad village, as the protest spilled over to the neighbouring Tuticorin district.

The Catholic Church has voiced its concern over the 'brutal use of force' on unarmed peaceful protesters, 'whose apprehensions about the safety of the nuclear plant are genuine'.

Bishop of Tuticorin Yvon Ambrosie sought the intervention of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa and the National Human Rights Commission to put an end to the attack on the freedom of the people.

'A large number of locals in Kudankulam have been slapped with sedition cases. The protesters were lathicharged, though they were more than a km away from the plant.

This shows the intolerant and fascist face of the government,' Supreme Court lawyer and anti-corruption activist Prashant Bhushan said.

BJP condemns police action against anti-nuclear protesters
Chennai, Sep 10, 2012, (PTI) :

BJP today condemned the police action on anti-nuclear protesters and held the UPA Government at Centre responsible for the "riot-like situation" in Kudankulam.

Party's Tamil Nadu unit chief Pon Radhakrishnan said the Centre showed urgency in taking up works (regarding uranium loading) after the Madras High Court gave the green signal for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant but did not adopt a similar approach in allaying the people's fears over the plant.

"Something which should have ended amicably has turned into a riot (like situation). The Centre, which did not understand people's sentiments, should take responsibility for this," he said in a statement.

He condemned the police action in lathicharging and firing teargas on the protestors, who continued their agitation against loading of fuel in the plant.
