Covington Catholic, school at center of D.C. March video, closed for security reasons
Source: NBC News
The Roman Catholic high school that found itself besieged by critics after its students got into a videotaped face off with a Native American activist on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial said it was closed Tuesday "due to threats of violence."
<snip>
Meanwhile, the American Indian Movement Chapters of Indiana and Kentucky, which had been planning to demonstrate outside the Park Hills, Kentucky school, moved its protest a couple miles east to the headquarters of the Diocese of Covington.
Protester Guy Jones, who is originally from the South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, said the incident "has really brought to the surface some really bad feelings." He said the students are a product of a "very deep rooted sickness that exists within our country today."

(8,200 posts)If a woman choses to have or not to have an abortion is none of my business. That is her prerogative. What makes me turn against religion is their belief that they have been appointed by some belief in a phantasy to impose their nonsense on me or anyone who doesn't believe in their delusions.
I find repulsive that kids who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and absolutely no real life experience, at least that is what these goody two shoe freaks claim, passing judgement on their fellow mankind. I would think that they would at least heed what their declared master warned: "He who is without sin cast the first stone." He also warned about those who come in sheep clothing but are ravenous wolves who will devour you. That is what it reminds me of. A pack of nasty hyenas, snarling and forming at the mouth and like snakes striking at the heal of desperate women. I consider them to be low life sanctimonious cowards with out an ounce of love in their bloody rotten souls.

(3,051 posts)The Washington Post just ran a story saying they confirmed he did not serve in Vietnam.
Unfortunate, as this discredits the entire story.

(35,270 posts)Thing is, the media still like to say "appears" to show what must be true instead of saying what other, very much not-edited videos, show.

(35,270 posts)He served in the early-mid '70s, but not in Vietnam. WaPo backed off that claim, but everybody else still cites WaPo's mistake. It's like a lot of other reporting. The video now "appears" to show this or "it was claimed that" something else happened. What's often missing is "the video did show".
He was quoted as saying he was a "Vietnam-time veteran". By the time he signed on there were drawdowns of forces in Vietnam and by the time he was through with his training Vietnamization was far along.

(6,161 posts)..... BUT never served in country why aren't you a Vietnam Veteran?
My grandfather served in US Army during/in WW I. Quartermaster Corp. My dad served in USN during/in WW II. Land based radioman intercepting German U-Boat communications.
My grandfathers headstone say WW I and my fathers headstone in a National Veterans Cemetery says WW II.
Most recently my brother-in-law (USAF) passed away and was just buried in the same National Cemetery as my dad. His headstone say "Vietnam" even though he never left the USA.
A Vietnam veteran is someone who served in the armed forces of participating countries during the Vietnam War. ... The U.S. government officially refers to ALL as "Vietnam-era veterans". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_veteran.
Thousands of servicemen in every generation including war times never served in war zones. We all enlisted, we were all paid according to our rank, we all went and did what we were ordered to do.
I served as a medic here in the states during the Vietnam years. We provided hospital beds and care for wound servicemen so they could recover from their injuries in hospital near their families until they were discharged. That was my role from 1965 to 1969.
Without the thousands of support personnel for each war zone individual we would not have been in WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Now at least the National Veterans Cemeteries designate us a Vietnam veterans on our headstones.

That isnt a job in the military.
USMC has Recon troops and US Army have Rangers.
Dr. King said it best: "Non violence".

(35,270 posts)There are probably a fair number of people in and around Cincinnati that don't like them. 45 minutes by public transportation.
Even I don't think 15 minutes is a long haul by car.
The "city" of Covington has a population of fewer than 41,000.
